You have two choices, you can either take it to a shop and have it power flushed, recommended because this gets rid of all the fluid and replaces it with new fluid. The second is to drop the transmission pan, most cars don't have a drain plug for transmission fluid, so you would need to take out all the bolts holding the transmission pan out slowly letting the fluid drain as you bring the pan down. After you have the pan off I would go ahead and change the transmission filter, it is just above the pan inside the transmission. Place the pan back onto the transmission and fill with fluid, about 6-8 quarts.

SOURCE: how much to change a oil pan gasket for 2001 grand prix 3.8 gt

If you want to repair the oil pan I would also check lower engine mount for leaking oil and cracks in anti sway bar near fitting's. This due to engine mount is oil filled. OEM sway bar is made of tubular steel and they crack easy. Replacement sway bar is solid steel. Here's the kicker. When they pull the lower frame to service oil pan. The engine mount and sway bar are attached to that frame. A honest mechanic should only charge for parts ($35 for mount and $100 for sway bar) and maybe a extra hour. My mechanic did all in 5 hours. FYI gasket is only $35 bucks. Good luck

Changing the transmission cooling lines on my 2000 Grand Am GT. Is it totally necessary to pull the pan and fully drain the transmission?

Nothing will happen. Removing the pan is to change the filter and get more fresh oil in the system . Look at the color of the fluid red is new brown is replace me soon in 10k or so black is yesterday or replace trans in 10k or less.

Were do i add transmission fluid in my 2000 pontiac grand am gt

Automatics have a dipstick on the passenger side under the hood. Add ATF with a funnel, engine idling and transmission in park. Standard shift has an oil level plug on the side of the transmission.

On the 2000 Grand Prix, is the oil pan the one in front, or is that the transmission fluid pan?

The one in front should be the oil pan, the transmission pan is stamped steel and sort of "L" shaped, starting on the drivers side and wrapping around behind the engine oil pan. The trans pan also does not have a drain plug, where the engine oil pan does.

'00 transmission fluid.

Take the transmission fluid dipstick out of the tube in the engine compartment and using a funnel that fits nicely into the tube, pour in the correct amount of transmission fluid. Remember too that unlike engine oil, transmission fluid is to be measured when hot and engine is running.
