one or both rear axles has a worn joint. if you can lift the car up on a hoist or 4 jack stands and inspect what happens with the car in the air. you want to isolate the issue to the axles and not one of the differentials

thanks james, it is four wheel drive, do you mean the whole rear axle would need replacing or which part of it. also how can i expect the present one to behave as it gets more worn and is it dangerous to continue driving as it wears. cheers marty.

SOURCE: speedometer does not work 1998 Subaru forester

Sounds that the magnetic pickup on the vehicle speed sensor has stopped working. Dirt or grease usually. That will cause an erratic reading. Also check wiring to sensor. Poor connection is rare but possible. Good luck and have a good day.

High speed vibration in steering is typically caused by an out-of balance wheel. I suggest having your wheels balanced.

No, and add some Trans X slip stop and leak stop, sold by K and W. about 16 ounces, this really helped my Forester, as a lot of them have this issue with the clutch pack in the tranny. sold at most auto parts stores and Wal Mart. take care.

1998 forester awd, running lights will not turn off after car is shut off.

Most Subarus have a switch on the top of the steering column that you usually can't see that allows you to leave your running lights on since most Subarus have the auto off lights. You should just have to switch that and it will be fine.

Where are the rear brake lines located on 1998 subaru forester

If you take off the rear wheels, you should see the rubber lines (if stock) with metal ends connected to the brakes and running up the wheel well. They are not too difficult to replace if need be.
