How much steering fluid do i put in my 2003 VW Passat?

If the power steering fluid reservoir has a dipstick attached to cap, just put in enough fluid to reach the full mark. If there is no dipstick, put in enough fluid just to the bottom of the filler neck.

There may be no check engine light but that doesn't mean there isn't a code in the ECU. Especially with a misfire. I'd have the codes scanned and see what you got. The cannister issue isn't going to give you a misfire it will give you stalling and rough idle.
Lets see what ECU is saying. You can go to Autozone if you don't have a scanner they will scan it for free. If scanning turns out negative than have a cylinder leakage test done. This way we can determine which cylinder has the problem and what the problem is.

You may want to take it to a repair shop and have them do a power steering flush, its so much easier and they will be able to flush out the rack assemblt as well.

The resovior is on the drivers side near the fender, it has a green cap on it. Use only VW fluid or you will have huge problems.
