Just bought a 2005 Durango Limited 4.7 4x4, and my oil filler cap is caked with old dried oil, can this get into my engine, or is there a screen or filter to prevent this. This is not the milky stuff I have seen around the web this is black and almost flaky old oil. perhaps a breakdown on how to take it off would help me so I can clean it.

that milky substance is just the result of not changing the oil enough, it is water and oil mixed. the water is just condensation that ends up at the highest point, the oil cap. clean it off and it should be fine. make sure that the oil is at the correct level.

Do compression check,if all cylinders are within 10 psi your O.K.. Also check oil filter for water (milky) or oil change and check radiator fluid level for any loss. If all is good it could just be from water in the air.

engine full of gunk and muck ,needs a good flush out and then change oil every 6000miles with a filter every third oil change

You have antifreeze in your oil. It could be a head gasket, but that should make the engine misfire badly. The most likely cause is a leaking intake manifold gasket. I t is imperative that you not drive the car until you have it repaired. The contaminated oil will eventually cause engine failure.

I had the same vehicle. The 4.7 oil filler tube was a design defect. I don't think there was an official recall on it, but in later years, there was a change to the design. Dodge did say that it was not a problem though. As far as the valves chattering, I had the same thing. Just takes a while for the oil to flow back up. A good resource for all of this is www.dodgedakotas.com. Does require a small membership but the information is good.
