If light is on there is a code stored . Use a correct scan tool. No free auto part stuff. Go to a shop get it scanned the proper tool.

On the side of your transmission will be a switch with several wires coming out of it. This is your reverse switch that turns on your reverse lights and most likely needs to be replaced

sorry but the local ford garage are right its got to do it when the mechanic has it ,i would suspect the alternator ,but who knows with these weird faults like this .Best advice i can give here is leave well alone till till it packs up completly
