Car shift seems locked

My 2005 nissan altima will not shift. It starts but I hit the brakes and try to move the shift to put in reverse and it seems like it is locked

  • lole468 Apr 25, 2009

what does this mean? Is there a fuse for this? or do I have to replace the brakes?

I had this problem a few months ago. I was able to drive the car home by taking a screwdriver and overiding the gear. Read your manual and if your car is equiped with an overide it will give you instructions. A little covered hole is to the left of the shift when in park. It is small circle and you must pry out the cover before using a screwdriver head to push the overide. I had to do this to put the car into reverse and then again to put it into drive. The solution: Nissan Auto Service replaced the crankshaft position sensor. Fortunately the car was still under the Extended Warranty at 68,000+ miles and this solved the problem. At 72,000 I had the rear right motor mount replaced. Too early for this. Now I am needing a new AC Compressor (79,000 miles) and it sounds like I'm on the vurge of problems with my catalyc converter. I have found a link that shows that many other Altima owners like me are having these very same problems at low miles. Check out: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/nissan_altima.html . Sounds like some recalls need to be done.

Good luck!

Probably due to safety on brake pedal, it will not allow you to move selectoer from park.

Niether, the switch is located on the brake pedal.

My 2005 Nissan Altima won't shift out of park to drive it will if I use a screwdriver in the gear slot how do I fix this problem?

You take it to a qualified repair shop . You have a problem with shift interlock system . Safety system that won't allow the gear selector to move ,unless drivers foot is pushing the brake pedal . Has a brake switch , locking solenoid , an is electrical controlled by the shift lock control unit .

Why doesnt my nissan altima shift

Im assuming you mean that the vehicle wont move when put it in gear and its an automatic! Check the transmission fluid level if it is ok check if vehicle will move in any other gear reverse 1 or L etc. If not it maybe a torque converter issue and maybe best for a transmission shop to sort

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima will not shift out of park.I have replaced the shifter assemble, brake lights do work,Need help

If the floor shift lever wont move out of park, there foot brake lock that prevents it from moving until you depress the brake pedal and pull it out of park. I think the release is vacuum operated so try depressing the brake pedal a few time while trying to release. TerBo

My 2005 Altima is stuck in park. Automatic transmission, low miles starts right up and steering wheel is not locked. Help please!!!

http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/2005-2006-nissan-altima-se-r-discussion/225903-shift-lock.html

your owner's manual will tell you how to over-ride the shift lock. ususally there is a hole covered by a plastic piece, next to the shifter. pop out the cover and push the button to shift. The shifter will lock back up in park until you fix the problem. You may want to set the parking brake and use neutral when you park the car instead of " Park". That way you will not have to push the release button-it will eventually break.

make sure your brake lights work; as the shift lock is powered by the brake light fuse-replace as needed.

2006 Altima won't shift into reverse or park

Is there any warning lights or malfunction besides this?? There are three main parts that may cause this: Park/Neutral safety switch(located on the transmission), Brake pedal switch(located at the brake pedal), Shift lock solenoid(located below the shifter). P/N safety switch prevents the shifter from shifting out of (P) or shifting into (R/P) while vehicle is in motion. Brake pedal switch sends a signal to release the shifter lock to shift out of park. Shift lock, locks the shifter as describe above and is located at the shifter base. I recommend inspection/replacement of the shift lock solenoid and P/N safety switch as its an intermitted problem. Hopefully this helps

03 Nissan Altima car will not shift out of park. I put a screwdriver on the shift lock to release the lock and now the shift will move. Can anybody tell me what the problem might be?

on the japanese cars u need to press the brake pedal to release the lock on the auto transmission.this works via the brake light switch.if u have no brake lights the switch is probably not working.replace this and see how things go.
