The locking hub control system is not engaging properly. On the 99 Tracker this is a compressed air system that consists of an air pump (compressor), electrical wiring to power and control the air pump, and air hoses that lead to an actuator inside the front differential housing. If there is a leak in the system the PCM will run the air pump for 10 seconds and then shut off, and your propeller shaft can turn all day long, but the front axles will remain free floating. Turn on your key, not your engine, and engage four wheel high. Go listen near the passenger front bumper for the air compressor. If you hear it, then the compressor control and the compressor itself are likely fine. If it shuts off after 10 secs or so, and your 4WD light isn’t on, the PCM timed out the compressor out and shut the compressor off to protect it. You will have to find the leak and fix it. If you are lucky, it’s the air line leading to the front differential; and not the air line inside the differential housing, or the air bladder in the locking actuator, which also resides inside the font diff. If the compressor shuts off and the 4WD light is on (this means the PCM did not shut the air compressor off due to timeout, so the pressure switch read 5-7 psi and the pump shut itself off), you likely don’t have a leak, and something mechanical has the actuator hung up inside the front differential. Lastly if you don't hear the compressor run at all, you either have a faulty compressor, or some sort of wiring problem in that circuit.....it could be as simple as a blown fuse. Good luck.

Hello everyone. I just bought a 99 2-door tracker. Thank you all for this blog. Everyone thinks it's a vacuum on the front dif at repair shops. You're right. There's a pump. It works and even builds up air pressure where it goes into the dif. Problem is that the dif still doesn't engage. I tried a light pressure pump from small air horns. Still nothing. With a long hose on it, I can blow into the line into the dif. It has no leaks at all. Just doesn't work. Does anyone have any suggestions to help convince this thing to engage before it gets really ugly? Like me yanking the differential. That is the ugly I referred to. Thanks a Bunch, Wayne...

if the back wheels are still on the ground then it will not turn until you lift one wheel of the ground. In 4wd the front and rear drive shafts are locked together. There is no diff in the transfer case.

Don't know where the fuse is located for the 4 wheel drive actuator on a 2004 Tracker!

2004. chevy tracker
yes, i have the FULL FSM.
actuator , you mean the front axle pump?
there is non, err, not directly
the PCM drives the pump direct, Page 9-a19(FSM)
pinsc51-2 pin 15, drives and pin 18 the PCM senses if it did.?
the pump is grounded, the PCM drives it on
the PCM has many rules for , not activating 4wd.
speed, load.,.RPM, etc.
and the switch is not on. C51-2,pin 11 is pcm 4wd switch input
and goes to 12v, for 4wd demand, then the PCM glow the lamp
and maybe turns on the pump.
post symptoms for better help.

maby im wrong but if you rev up and only rear wheels spin that means that it might be 4 wheel drive but not constant 4 wheel drive or diff lock system ,,,, ,, in 4 wheel drive all wheells will turn together but if pressure of slip is bad enough or torque high enough only 2 wheels will drive ,,, thats why diff lock locks wheels together in each axle to over come this ,,, all wheel drive like in landrover locks all 4 wheels together to ensure all wheels rotate to give best grip

4x4 quit working

Jack up the rear wheels and put it on jack stands. Have someone get in it and put it in 4wd and drive. Release the brake. Rear wheels are spinning only right. Don't get under it but look under it and see if the front driveshaft is spinning. If the shaft is spinning but the wheels aren't it is likely a bad front axle actuator. If the front shaft isn't spinning it is a transfercase problem.

Ive gone thru this THREE TIMES w/ my '99! Theres a thin, rubber vacuum hose that wears thin, gets dirt/oil/water in it & shorts a relay. The last mechanic replaced the hose w/ steel brakeline & Ive had no problems for 2 yrs.

4wd wont engage

Chain. And they very rarely break. Have you jacked up the rear wheels and put it in 4wd to see if the front shaft is turning with the rear shaft. This will determine if it is a transfer case problem or a front differential actuator problem.
