Unplug the IAC motor when it's warm. It should be idling at below 500. If it is faster than this check for vac leaks. If non are found, adjust the base idle. Then plug the IAC back in and let the Idle stabilize. Now it should be about 800. Shut it off and try it again and see if it revs high.

Idles high from first to second gear .

Define idles high like its going high rpms before shifting or the engine itself is high reving if its high rpming when shifting its mostly you tranny going out you can try tranny fix oil I used it on my truck when it had shifting problems and ive had no problems since it takes a few days to work though and if its the motor itself it could be a lot of things but I dont know much of the problem based on what you told us

sounds like you are having problems with the throttle valve cable trying to stick. check to see with the engine turned off to see by pressing down on acclerator pedal to the floor and releasing it quickly. if it shows to be slow in returning then you need to replace cable on throttle body. hope this will help you!!!

Son's 91 ranger idols fine you can rev engine.but as soon as you take off in a few seconds it starts to shake and die.

this sounds like it is not getting enough fuel to engine. change fuel filter, and check to make sure air filter is clean. also check the fuel pressure regulator if need be.

With out a check engine code there could be few things that can do this, clean the mass air flow sensor, check your engine air cleaner and then if this doesn't help, have someone start the car while you watch the throttle linkages, after it warms up watch which linkage moves when the engine speed drops this will be connected to the problem sensor / auto choke. Try unplugging it to see if it helps before you go out and buy a new one.
I hope this helps
