I've seen lots of problems with brake switches on these style pickups. Usually they stick on. That also prevents you from being able to set your cruise control, because the engine computer sees that the brakes are on, when they're really not. If you have access to a scan tool that can read codes and data, there should be a Diagnostic Trouble Code stored in the engine computer related to the brake switch. You can also verify by looking at data in the scan tool that the switch is actually staying "applied", when it really should be "released". If you don't have a scan tool, reach under the dash by the top of the brake pedal and unplug the brake switch. If your brake lights turn off (ignition key has to be on for brake lights to work), then you've found your problem.
The brake light can stay on if the master cylinder is low on brake fluid or if the emergency brake is on. The switch that turns the brake light on could be stuck on by the emergency brake pedal or handle. The check engine light is on because the cars computer senses a fault in the cars system. Have a mechanic shop scope the cars computer
mcdevito75 here, It could be a faulty or out of adjustment brake light switch, With the motor off place your foot behind the brake pedal and gentely lift up on the brake pedal, if the brake lights go out, then it"s a mis adjusted brake light switch.
the plastic round stopper most probably broke that is were the stoplight switch sits when not depressed easy fix find a washer small enough to block the hole were the original plastic stopper was making sure the washer aligns to the brake light switch and secure washer w/ zipties hope this helps.
