The P0496 DTC code is a generic code which applies to all vehicle makes. A quick search on the 'net shows that this code seems to be more common with GM

DTC P0496 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) SYSTEM FLOW DURING NON-PURGE

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
This DTC tests for undesired intake manifold vacuum flow to the evaporative emission (EVAP) system. The control module seals the EVAP system by commanding the EVAP canister purge valve Closed and the EVAP canister vent valve Closed. The control module monitors the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor to determine if a vacuum is being drawn on the EVAP system. If vacuum in the EVAP system is more than a predetermined value within a predetermined time, this DTC sets.

i have a 2006 cadillac cts and when i get gas it dont wont to start ,,i haft to keep trying to start it but when it does ,,it runs like a new one ,, help please,,

P0300 is multiple engine misfire detected
P0303 is misfire in cylinder 3
P0305 is misfire in cylinder 5
P0343 is camshaft position sensor A (bank 1)
P0347 is camshaft position sensor A (bank 2)
P0368 is camshaft position sensor B (bank 1)
P0392 is camshaft position sensor B (bank2)
P0496 is EVAP Canister Purge System High Purge Flow

P0496 is not a gas cap, problem is with the purge vent solenoid (on intake manif) or purge vent valve (under car by fuel tank). Most likely the vent valve. Depending on your vehicle/VIN you may be eligible for the 10 year/120k mile warranty Caddy just came out with but is keeping a tight lip on. See bulletin #09205 dated 3-11-2010. Hello: P0496 deals with the evap system. You have to have a scan tool to clear the code. But if you don't repair the problem the light will come back on. Other than checking the wiring and connector you will need a scan tool to diagnose it.

Check the gas cap,also,it could mean the evap system is not working,or you have run out of gas recently,if all this checks out ok,then the tank is not venting properly.

Unfortunately not. This vehicle has a very sophisticated CPU and the old age tricks will not work on this particular design. You will need to gain access and allow a professional GM tech to pull the Cadillac codes. An ordinary code reader may miss the exclusive Cadillac codes that may be stored at any given time.

A certified GM/Cadillac code reader will be your best bet..
