Hello Ronald Reed,

VERY interesting ... Welcome to FIXYA...
Sorry to hear about your Santa Fe

I HAVE seen similar issues before...
but never with the loss of "GEARS"

Everything else seems to be good. I would be
thinking about having an EXHAUST shop look
for a loose MUFFLER baffle or collapsing
CATALYTIC CONVERTER...

A rusted or loose part inside can COMPLETELY
block EXHAUST OUTFLOW...

It is not a COMMON trouble... but certainly worth
the look (while you are mobile (my opinion...
RATHER than WASTING time & money
buying A WHOLE lot of UNNECESSARY oxygen
sensors
( get mistakenly replaced )...

(( from "FREE" code readings )).\

Just

((( really difficult to resolve when you are immobile ))).

~~

CATALYTIC Converter prices have come WAY DOWN... but exhaust shops are loath to admit it... (my opinion)...
Big Santa Fe V6 (sample prices)

Check immediately below for complete systems
(mufflers)
2005 HYUNDAI SANTA FE 3 5L V6 Muffler Resonator RockAuto

Hope this helps...

I suggest you get one of those manuals people get nowadays to do it yourself.. My nephew use it to repair my car and it's totally repaired now. Here's the website he bought it from.

SOURCE: Hyundai Santa Fe 2005 won't shift into first gear

Most likely the o-ring seal between the torque converter and the transmission is going bad. Get that transmission rebuilt pronto before serious damage is done! But first, have a mechanic drop the transmission pan and look for signs of a very thin silvery film coating the inside of the pan. If found, then the transmission definitely will have to be rebuilt, and the torque converter will also have to be replaced since embedded metallic particles in the old torque converter will eventually come loose, due to wear of the clutch plates within the torque converter, and eat up the rebuilt transmission. Now, here is the deal once the transmission has been rebuilt:

Change the transmission fluid and filter once a year -- no matter what! If you do this, then you should never have any more problems with the transmission.

Which 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe has a traction control button?

Most Santa Fe model from that year had traction control fitted as standard. Check the dashboard centre console. There will be a button marked like the attached image. Different car makers put them in different places. It could be anywhere from next to the gear stick to up high on the centre of the dashboard.

My hyundai sata fe 2005. was driving and sudenly lost all gears. no warning. foward and reverse. puleed to side of road. shut off checked for leaks none. turned back on drove fine for a few hundred feet....

Some vehicles are made with built in safety features to either not allow the vehicle to start or move if something serious is wrong. Don't know about the exhaust emission but could be in computer software to disable in case of excess emission. Could just be a bad O2 sensor. Need to fix the emission code problem, reboot the computer and try again.

2005 Hyundai Santa Fe. Car shifts very hard from 2nd to 3rd gear. Along with the hard shifting it jumps/jerks when it engages into 3rd gear.when downshifting Very hard shift into lower gears and car slows...

First thing ... pull the dipstick and check the oil. It should be bright pink or red, if it's brown or black and smells bad your oil has never been changed. Drain as much as you can, measure how much came out and replace it with synthetic compatible oil. Start the car and let is run for a few minutes and shift the gears a few times ... then take it for about a 10 mile ride to circulate the oil, stop and go now and then so it will shift through all the gears. You could also add about half a quart of Lucas Transmission Fix.
