1988 ford f150 running rough

My newly purchased f150 has sat for the last 10 years. The gas was bad so I have cleaned the tanks, new low pressure pumps and filters, new inline filter, new high pressure pump, injectors were cleaned and checked out good, new regulator. I have replaced the map sensor, egr valve, iac valve, and throttle position sensor. The truck timing is set at 10 degrees and seems to be solid and advances when I increase the throttle. The plugs wires distributor cap are new. The truck idles a bit highat 850rpm, and when I accelerate it seems to miss then surge with power...almost like it is missing. The only code on the computer is a code 42 running rich.I am at a loss...Please help. The motor is the straight 6 4.9 litre. It is a standard,4 speed trans.

Might want to change o2 sensor's, If they are not sending the right single its tell the computer to dump fuel. 1988 was using a fuel density system.
(1989 came out with Mass air flow system)
Check this
I think it might have a TFI module that's not working right. Located under distributor. Its gray and about 4" long and if equip, you need a 4 or 5.5 mm tool to unbolt it. This was a common thing back in the 80's. Its been so long I can't remember if the 4.9 straight 6 had it or not.

1986 ford f150 starting problem. When ignition is turned on fuel pump continues to run. Engine runs rough until running temp reached.

Fuel pump(assist pump on tank has probably failed, making the main pump in frame work hard. But if it does this on both tanks,it is probably the high pressure pump on the frame.
Could also be bad fuel pressure regulator or vacuum line going to it.
There was also a problem with some year Fords tank selector valve below the frame malfunctioning. don-ohio (:^)

Do you have 2 gas tanks?

My 1988 Ford F150 4X4 5.8L with duel tanks runs for about 10 mins then acts like it runs out of fuel and wont start back up. Ive replaced the fuel filters and the in-line fuel pump, pressure release valve...

With 2 tanks have you a balance pipe between tanks or a 2 way tap. IT sponds as if there is a low pressure problem ( vacuum) occuring as the pump draws out fuel and as atmospheric pressure is needed to push fuel to the pump the pump will not be able to keep up pressure . Check for correct fuel cap on both tanks and a balance tube between tanks to allow air to keep the pressure equal in the tanks

What is wrong with 88 F-150 when it won't run on front gas tank , will run a short time, then quit, replaced pump, still same thing.

Try checking the tank selector valve under the truck in the back by the tanks, it might be bad or not operating right, or have it checked.
