I have a 1995 Jag XJ12 and i just got major works done on this car.
About 2 months ago the car got overheated and the coolant reservoir blew up and i took it to a jaguar specialist and they replaced everything that my jag needed (new coolant expansion tank, new timing belt, new chain tensioner, new thermostat, new hoses, minor tune up, etc)
The jag drives smooth and always starts and never overheats since it's repaired (over a month) but this morning i started the car and when i started driving, the check engine light came on and it stayed on..i didn't notice anything wrong with the car..engine is quiet, it's not overheating, transmission is smooth, so what could be the problem? i'm kind of traumatic from the last experience because i don't want to wait til something major happens (knock on wood) to this car and i end up with high cost of repair..is this something that i should ignore? i took it to a jaguar dealer and they said if its not flashing then i don't have to worry and told me to check the gas cap to see if its loose or not because sometimes it would send a signal to the computer thus the check engine light comes on..the dealer can check it but it will cost me almost 300 bucks?!? holy **** just to check the light? any help would be appreciated..thank you so much for reading and god bless!
I recently, April 12, purchased a 95 XJ12 that looks like it has minor problems. Its overheating. The Jag has been sitting for 2 years in a garage. It did not have a current title or local state plates, so it was sitting in the garage.
Anyway, I am restoring it. The prev owner gave me a Jag XJ12 DVD with all the manuals and diagrams. However, it did not have the diagrams I needed for the relays. So, I started to look for manuals. Nothing exists aside from the Jaguar OEM DVD and more expensive dealer paper manuals.
Unfortunetly, the 95 XJ12 has the OBD-1 system on it. I am in the process of finding a OBD-1 for the 95 XJ12. So far, none, but am calling OBD scanner companies.
The site below cost $17 one year and $50 5 years but it has all of the diagrams for all the relays, etc, repair instructions, ...

I purchased $50 plan since I plan to keep the JAG. I think its going to be a classic.
I would like to keep in touch with you to share info on self-repair tips.
If you want to share the cost for the site above email me.

You can but a ODB II Scanner.
Open the bonnet and check on the JAG Mfg Tag near over the radiator where it states the engine type, etc
My JAG is a 1995 XJ12 USA, and it says ODB II Certified.
You can purchase for about $300 the

Trilingual OBD II Enhanced CAN Scan Tool, optional OBD I. CP9185 Elite AutoScanner
It will give detail info on any problems. Sounds like a faulty relay. They tell me that as the relay gets older the electrical heat makes them brittle and they do not function correctly when they got hot after running the car for over 30 to 1 hr or more. The scanner should find it when its hot not when its cold.
It will save you money.

Does your 1995 JAG XJ12 run in the HOT range.
I was told that the XJ12 engine runs near the HOT, Red Zone, area.
Does your 95 Jag run at this range normally? After 30 minutes of driving?

thanks for the quick reply hotchevy, i checked the gas cap and it's not loose but the light is still on..i will try to take it to auto zone or napa auto parts later after i get off work and will post the results here.
thanks again and god bless
best,

ok here's an update..yesterday after i got off work, the check engine light was still on and then i stopped for lunch 20 mins later i started the car and the check engine light wasn't on anymore..and it's still off til now..so i decided not to go to auto zone..do you i just keep driving and ignore this or should i still have my car checked? im just afraid im gonna get ripped off by the dealer...
any advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks so much..
Here's more updates, today i started the car and the SRS Bag light came on and also the Radiator sign light came on both in red color which is, as far as i know, more serious than the amber warning lights..so i turned off the engine and then turned it back on, and those lights didn't turn on anymore and they remain off up til now. What's happening here? Is it just a faulty sensor? Now, i just get paranoid that the car will breakdown without warning...Tonight, I took it for a drive and i didn't notice anything wrong. Everything runs smoothly. Am i just over thinking it or i just don't see a problem coming? I'd like to have it checked (pressure test and etc) but it costs a tremendous amount of money just to get it checked and also i just got some major worked done on this jag and they did all the tests and the scanning so i can be sure that theres nothing wrong with the engine but at the same time i don't want to be stranded somewhere.
I really appreciate all the responses hotchevy and for victor i don't know if i want to buy a self-repair plan as i know nothing about repairing and i don't have the tools for it but thanks, mate.
looking forward to hearing from you all
thanks and god bless
Hi Victor, thanks for the info on the scanner i'll try to look into that.
It sounds like it's worth to buy. Anyway, if your jaguar runs near the HOT area on the temp gauge, you really want to get that checked. Mine runs just below the NORMAL range, the needle sits just one line below the N on the temp gauge once the engine reaches the set temperature. If you read my other post, before i got my jag fixed, i had the same problem as yours. Mine overheated and it ran near the HOT red zone area. This happened after i took my jag for an oil change at Jensen Tires (these guys are just bad news and they don't know anything about jaguar cars, don't even ask why i took it there im still regretting the day i took my jag to Jensen) I got my car back as soon as i started driving the needle on the temp started creeping up and it went all the way up to H but nothing happened ( i was expecting smoke or something to come out of the bonnet) and i drove back to Jensen again and asked what happened to the car. They tried to do some basic test to see if there's something wrong with the thermostats but they didn't find anything wrong with them. At this point my car is still running with the needle still all the way up to H on the gauge. They thought it was weird because they said if the reading is actually right then the engine wouldve been hissing or couldve been all smokey due to the overheating. So i took it home and the next day the needle just sat right below N so i thought maybe it's just a faulty on the sensor so i kept driving it for almost over 6 months (never on a long drive, though) one day it went up all the way to H again so i ignored it, i pulled in to a parking lot and all the sudden i hear a LOUD noise from under the hood and BAM! my coolant expansion tank blew up. Lesson learned. I guess the thermostat was sending the right signal all this time and the mechanic said there wasn't any flow in my coolant tank so it built up so much pressure thus it blew up. V12 is known for running hot but how hot is too hot? I found the answer in this article. You should read it and i think it gives you all the info you need as far as when you should start to worry about the engine overheating. Here's the link http://www.jag-lovers.org/xj-s/book/XJS_...
It's a pdf file and it covers most of the basic maintenance on Jaguar XJ series. Check out page 172-ish i think there's an illustration of where the needle on the temp gauge is supposed to sit.
Hope that helps, Victor sorry for the long post, mate.
cheers,
