The cable going from the gauge to the sender unit is an earth return. if you take it off the sender unit wire if the gauge does read hot the sender and earth it out the gauge should go to the hot segment.dont leave this cable to earth very long do it quickly. if the gauge does read it is ok, there is no earth to the petrol tank. if it does not read it will be faulty. hope this helps.

OHMS Resistance for temp gauge

The OHM's are different from manufacturers. Usually the work or don't. I just test the leads and heat up the sensor with a lighter. If the resistance changes, it is good. If it doesn't read or doesn't change, it is bad. Wires usually break right behind the plug. Check for continuity at the lead and about two inches back on the wire.

I have a 2003 GMC Envoy water temperature guage does not work every thing else on dash works

check the temp gauge sender unit normally located at the front of the cylinder head it will have a wire on it, by removing the wire and grounding it, this will make the temp gauge go to full. If so replace the sender unit, if not recomend after market gauge reccomended

Temp guage sits at 0 but it runs fine and the cooling fan still kicks on and off

If all other guages are working, the coolant level is ok, and the heater is nice and warm, I'd say you need a new Coolant Temperature Sensor.

Temperature guage up

temp guages are just a guide, they vary considrably, and as long as the car runs fine,no warning lights/lack of power all is fine....(depends what you are used to,mine runs at 110 with a guage from 80 to 120.)

Temp guage dont read

U are talking about two different sending units, one is the Engine Coolant Temp sensor, the other is the temp guage sender, sounds like you have a bad thermostat, if the engine doesn't reach the proper operating temp it will set a code for the engine coolant temp sensor, and the guage will not move or move very little, replace your thermostat and both problems will go away.
