First I suggest a full tune up, including air and fuel filters. If you have already taken care of this, then you maybe overloading or flooding your engine with fuel. If the problem seems worse when you first start the car in the morning and gets slightly better as it warms up then you may have a bad coolant temperature sensor. This is about a $30 part. This sensor adjusts the amount of fuel pumped through your injectors to make up for cold temps much like choking an older vehicle. If it goes out, it sends the ECM a signal that the temp is negative 27 f and so it dumps all the fuel it can on the fire to compensate. A good indicator of this would be poor fuel milage, with this car you should be getting between 27 and 32 mpg. Most mechanics charge about 60 to 90 bucks to change this part.

SOURCE: 2001 TOYOTA COROLLA NO POWER

This problem does not seem to be the fuel pump. it appears to be an electrical problem in particular your ignition. Also check the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. if the computer cannot read how much air is coming in it will try to shut down.

SOURCE: 1994 toyota corolla has a runs rough at idle and

I have a similar problem with one of my Toyota Corollas. It's a 95 model with the 1.8L engine (7A-FE, automatic). But unlike yours, it has plenty of power while running. Here's what it does. Occasionally the engine misses. Sometimes it will die. This is most likely to happen when you start the car and put it in reverse and start rolling without giving the engine time to adjust. I've been told by some customers that it will die sometimes when coming to a stop. But this has never happened when I drive it. I don't think it's a fuel issue because the car runs just fine when it's running.

Here's what I've tried so far:

  1. Replaced spark plugs and wires.
  2. Used gasoline additive fuel injector cleaner.
  3. Checked air filter.
  4. Checked vacuum hoses for leaks.
  5. Replaced PCV valve and hoses.
  6. Cleaned the air intake and throttle body with carburetor cleaner.
So far there is no change in the problem.

What I plan to do next:
  1. Check the throttle position sensor.
  2. Check the MAF sensor.
  3. Adjust the idle via the set screw.

After that I have no idea what to do next if the problem persists. The check engine light is not on so I don't think there are any error codes. Will let you know.

Why does it seem to bog down while accelerating?

This could be caused by many things, but if you have done the basics (fuel pressure test, tune up, fuel filter, air filter) check for restricted exhaust = bad converter or muffler.

Car idles fine, but sputters, bogs and dies if gas pedal is pressed.

new spark plugs this decade. (a tune up?0
the filter is part of all 60k tuneups. letting it clog wrecks good pumps.
my wild guess, its lack of fuel flow, do to old filter.
or low fuel pressure.
car is identical to a Corolla. so is not unique or rare as some Geo cars are.
the cam belt not changes, invites valve kissing piston tops. BOOM
end of engine. (costs more to fix then worth of car)
the word is bogging, my engine bogs
if if bogs WOT (wide open throttle) and dont catch up < ITS NOT THE TPS. ever.
tps bad causes short bogs, called hesitations.
The map sensor , is what measure air flow and the ECU matches fuel to this air flow.
my guess, is it does that, but fuel pressure is like 15PSI, bad.

2000 toyota corolla ve engine will run at idle but when you step on gas engine dies if you let off gas it stay running at idle got good fuel pressure good spark.i changed ecm changed fuel pump spark plugs...

Check the throttle cable to see if it's binding or catching on anything. If not, check the throttle body. If it's gummed up with carbon and not moving freely, you could be trying to add air that's simply not getting into the engine, while the computer throws a bunch of fuel in to match what it thinks it a ton of air.

Hope this helps.

2000gc wont accelerate... Fuel filter??

Change the filter first and see if that helps, if not, have a fuel pressure test done.
Also check all the vacuum lines for bad hoses, all it takes is a pin hole in these damn emissions systems to screw up the whole system.
