it has to fit,sure.
and have correct gear ratios
4r70w this is only series number, not any actual transmission #
the TCM (part of PCM) must like it, for sure ratios.

the old box has tag on the side, and is bingo for full and real p/n#

Should be stamped on the tranny pan

The 4r75w and the 4r70w have most of the same components but there is one sensor more on the 4r75w that reads the shell in the center of the trans

change trans fluid and filter , possible get trasns flushed check electrical connections

Manual: M5, ZF 5 speed are your best bets and most common to be found

Auto: AOD E4OD, C6, C5 are the best bets. in later cars a 4R70W or Torqueshift may be used.

YOU HAVE A AOD,NOT AN AODE. YOU'RE AOD HAS A MANUAL THROTTLE VALVE CABLE WITH MANUAL OVERDRIVE SELECTIVE BY LINKAGE. AODE HAS ELECTRONIC OVERDRIVE ACTIVATED BT A BUTTON AND MORE INTERNAL ELECTRONICS,THIS ONE WON'T WORK. TRY GETTING A REBUILD ON IT,MAY BE CHEAPER WITH A WARRANTY! GO SOME WHERE RELIABLE THOUGH LIKE DEALER.

I would say that physically the transmission may fit due to the engine sizes being the same, but the 96 F150 is a E4OD transmission and the 01 is a 4R70W transmission, they do not work the same electrically.
