My 1999 Volvo S70 has 135,000 miles. The warning lights come on in various configurations and then the speedometer doesn't work and the mileage display disappears. After a few minutes, a few of the warning lights go off and the speedometer and mileage indicator resume. The cruise control has suddenly stopped working as well and it is now tempermental about starting. I had a problem with the cruise control awhile back and it turned out to be the Electronic Throttle. I had it replaced, later found out this was covered as part of a lawsuit settlement with Volvo. Is it possible the ET is going bad again? Any suggestions? Is it time to dump it?

Usually the ABS computer knows what it is doing. You may want someone to hookup a scanner to the ABS test port.
When I had my speedometer and odometer act up, it turned out to be a bad alternator. You might want to check yours.

Sounds like a bad ABS control module is at least part of your problem. The symptoms are usually and ABS and TRACS light intermittent or constand and eventually your speedometer works intermittently or totally quits. This guy rebuilds/upgrades them for about $140. New ones run over $800. http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/Volvo_Parts/Volvo_ABS_removal.htm

it appears there is a computer program upgrade for a few cruise control problems on your car. can only be done at a volvo dealership though. call them and see if any would applie to your cars vin# they dont give out any info online exept for that there are problems with the cruise control and the "fly by wire" throttle control. they may be more exspensive at the dealer but they have the proper tools and information needed to fix the car. in the long run it will be alot cheaper than throwing parts at it.as a side note that car is what is called a networked car.meaning even seemingly simple parts like a seat or window switch are actually computers. that is why i asked about any new electric parts., if a used part were to be installed it would be very likely the programing in it would disagree with your car causing a software coruption problem ranging from wierd minor stuff to failure to run at all. a new part would be unprogrammed and cause the same problems.

I have the identical problem with mine. I replaced trans speed sensor, a mech told me it could be a vac leak essentially giving strange readings to the ecu, then going into default, found a couple vac leaks didn't make a change.
