First of all u need to determine what color of smoke it is and is it coming out of the exhaust pipe. black smoke means excessive gas burning ...blue smoke means burning oil ...white smoke if seen in warm weather conditions means coolant leak into cylinder heads... but as running rich and high low idle might have a vacuum leak or carburetor need new base gasket or rebuilt ... good luck

I had the same problem on a Rover. There was a leak in inlet manifold that was caussing the problem.
To verify, spray some sealant to temporarily seal the inlet manifold .and the eratic idling should disappear for some time.
If it does, you know there is leak in inlet manifold which you can take of and refit with a new gasket.

if it is a carburated engine it is probably the a.a.p. diaphragm in the carb. if you remove the air cleaner and look on the side of the carb that is towards the valve cover near the front yow will see a vacuum hose going to a cover that is fastened with 3 screws. if you pull the vacuum line off you will see that there is probably fuel being sucked into the line due to the leaking diaphragm. the vacuum source is temp controlled and cuts off when warm. but when cold sucks fuel directly into the intake. remove the 3 screws to replace the diaphragm, being carefull of the spring. good luck!

Check you coolant temp sensor ,If it is bad it will be reading{ 40 degrees below zero }and this will cause a rich condition due to the computer thinking it is that could outside, which requires more fuel .:)

faulty plug wire only conducting at high revs,when its running rough try removing each plug wire individually and if it runs the same when you remove a certain wire then thats the faulty one,your timing could be off if that doesnt work,when you pull the wire wear a rubber glove or shut off car each time or you will get a shocking surprise

sounds like you have a very dirty mass air flow meter. invest in a new one and be sure to clean the throttle body with an appropriate cleaner and tooth brush.
