How do you adjust linkage for transfer case

SHIFT LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
(1) Shift transfer case into 4L position. (make sure your shifter is fully in the 4L position)
(2) Raise vehicle.
(3) Loosen lock bolt on adjusting trunnion (Fig.
87).
(4) Be sure linkage rod slides freely in trunnion.
Clean rod and apply spray lube if necessary.
(5) Verify that transfer case range lever is fully
engaged in 4L position. (you can do this under the vehicle at the transfer case)
(6) Tighten adjusting trunnion lock bolt.
(7) Lower vehicle

Basically, you are just ensuring that the position you put the lever inside the vehicle is the same position that the transfer case lever is in and then tightening the locking bolt.

How do I find instructions for changing out 4wd shifter cable/rod ?

that is called the FSM
the OEM factory service manual.
09 JK , i have 08.
what transmission, is there A/T or m/t stick>??

alldata.com has this
as does tech authority. (FSM source real)
if doing work DIY buy the book first, the read it and ask questions?

is this your first cable? ever?
not even ever fixed a bicycle cable.???

the shifter lever goes to a thing called, the transfer case
i hope you read the operators guide first, and not driving on dry ice free pavement, as that is wrong, so dont blame shifter on your not reading the book.
why not post symptoms first, the your guess. be best huh?
but ill play this game, you asked how, so will tell.

did you scan it first to see if you have C14xx errors.?

jack up car, yet, and have person 1 move lever and person2
look at the transfer case end. to see if the cable even works in
its full range, (1:1 ACTION) ?
IF IT DOES, you are barking up wrong tree.

to remove cable page 7167
1. Shift transfer case into 4L.
2. Raise vehicle.
3. Remove clip securing the transfer case shift cable (2) to the shift cable support bracket.
4. Disengage any additional shift cable routing clips, if necessary.
5. Disengage the shift cable from the transfer case manual lever.
Fig. 111: Shift Lever

6. Lower the vehicle.

but only if its bad. if it moves full range , wheels off ground, its good.

When I shift manual shifter from 4 wheel drive back to 2 wheel drive, truck does not want to return to 2 wheel drive. Dash light goes off as expected. No service light comes on. I did put truck in reverse...

Just to confirm, you don't have an electrical 4WD selector; you have to move a shifter on the floor of our cab? If that's the case, I'd suspect that you have a linkage misalignment or malfunction that doesn't allow the 4WD selector to completely return to the 2WD position. Putting the truck into reverse and back to drive probably causes a jolt to the 4WD linkage which disengages the transfer case from the driveline. Check for slack or binding in the transfer case shift level linkage (clean and lube the linkage won't hurt).

Four wheel drive shifter will not move

Put the transmission into neutral, then allow the vehicle to roll backwards, this will unbind the transfer case, pull on the shifter while rolling. If that doesn't work, then your linkage under the vehicle has something putting it in a bind. look around and make sure it moves around with slack. Enjoy

Transfer case wont engage

shift into 4wd and move truck a couple of feet.
if light is still off, park truck block the wheels set the park brake jack right front wheel and try to hand spin the wheel if wheel doesn't turn 4x4 is functioning properly but there is a wiring problem use an ohmmeter to check the 4x4 switch wiring fuse and bulb
if wheel turns freely the front axle or transfer case is not engaged
attempt to hand spin the front driveshft if the driveshaft will spin the transfer case is not engaged check the transfer case shift linkage, problem is in linkage or transfer case internals
if the driveshaft will not spin the transfer case is engaged properly
with trnsmission in neutral or park start engine measure vacuum on the two vac lines at front axle shift motor . one line should have approx 20" vacuum. other line should have none
if no vacuum measured look for vac leak or bad vac switch
if both lines have vac look for a bad vac swithc or ruptured cad actuator diaphragm
if one line has 20" +- VAC
move transfer case lever to 2wd measure vac again lines should have swapped vac signals
if no vac switch bad or 4wd shift likage needs adjusting
if yes vac motor bad or stuck or shift fork stuck
remove vac shift motor from the axle attach vac lines to shift motor engage disengage 4wd
does shift motor plunger move at least 1/2 inch
no shift motor bad
yes check axle shift fork and vac motor for binging

Transfer case

you will have to take the shifter out of the transfer case, remove the shifter bushing, then look down into the transfer case.you will need a flash light, you will see the ends of two rods that have slots in them.take a long screwdriver and move the rods so the notches in them are even with oneanother.the rods will slide back and forth.once the notches are lined up you can shift your tranny.the bushing needs replacing in the shifter on the transfer case.look on EBAY and you will find them.
