I have a 1990 Camry with very low miles (just turned 50,000 =). However, since I moved to CO three years ago it's had trouble starting (always in the cold and always in the mountains). Sometimes when I turn the key, the engine will rev, but not start. However, I can slam my foot hard on the gas for about 10 seconds and then it will start (a bit wobbly at first, but then it gets going).
However, now this problem is starting when I'm Denver (altitude: 5,280 as opposed to 9,000 ft). So I'm guessing it's not just a "mountains" problem. It only happens in cold weather. One mechanic told me that my car has the wrong spark plugs. Could this be causing the problem? It seems like my car can't get enough fuel to start up. Other people have suggested the fuel injector, a plugged fuel filter, bad fuel pump ... any insight?

I don't have a garage and it never stays in the shop cuz the mechanics can't figure out what's wrong w/ it, because it starts right up every time I'm in there ... naturally. checks if rear brakes are grabbing check all wheels to see if one is hot.Was old filter bad?You could have alot of trash in the gas tank.Is air filter clean?Sparkplugs good,and wires.
Check your air intake for loose connections or the MAF sensor "Mass Air Flow Sensor it's located on the air intake. Or replace the air filter it could be old and full of dirt so get this replaced. You can buy the filter at most auto parts stores if you need help ask them. PS don't go to any Wal Mart they don't know anything about cars.
The Camry's transmission fluid is meant to be changed every 50,000 miles. At least, that's what Toyota says; it is possible to go more than 50,000 miles between changes but I would advise against it. Your car is almost 2 years old, so unless you are driving over 25,000 miles a year you shouldn't be needing a transmission fluid change just yet.
Sounds like you have an intermittant problem, check all your wirirng, then you can move on to ignition related coil reluctor wheel ( in side the distribitor electronic control module again inside the distribitor. It could also be a fuel system problem do you hear the fuel pump come on when you turn on the key, the fuel pump should cycle until it devlops adequate pressure ( usually 3 - 4 seconds)
With that many miles and years there are a lot of thoughts. If your tune up parts are old that would be the place to start; making sure there is no fouling of the plugs.
The speedometer went out at 50,000 miles. The head gasket blew at 125,000 miles. I bought this car new when I started college, and it was the best front-wheel drive car I ever owned. The speedometer went at about 50,000 miles. I traced it to the printed circuit board, but Chrysler didn't carry the part, so I guessed my speed based on what gear I was in and my tachometer reading.
