A screeching sound is frequently associated with the engine's serpentine belt, which drives several accessory components including a/c compressor, water pump, power steering pump, alternator, and (on some models) an air pump for the emissions control system. The belt also has a tensioner pulley that self-adjusts to maintain constant tension on the serpentine belt, and it usually has a fixed idler pulley for proper routing of the belt. Check the idler pulley and tensioner pulley to ensure that they are turning freely. Also check the a/c compressor and power steering pulleys for the same thing. If any one of these items are faulty and require replacement, you should also replace the serpentine belt as it may have endured significant wear from the dragging pulley.
Could be a pulley, belt or bearings of sort. Take it to a well referenced repair shop for proper diagnostics.
SOURCE: whining sound in front end
It could be chopped tires or a front wheel bearing. Rub your hand around the front and rear tires and see if they are un-even like a wash board. If they are they need replacing and will make a wierd whining noise that changes with the speed. The wheel bearings can also make this noise so check the tires and go from there. I hope this helps you.....Dan
SOURCE: car is squealing and whining in front of engine. Can you help?
It sounds to me as if your serpentine belt and/or belt tensioner is bad,
I had a similar problem on my s10 and replaced belt, idler & tensioner.
All three pieces ran about $80.00. I did the work myself. Hope this helps.
SOURCE: silverado 4.8 liter engine makes a whining noise.
Back pressure from a clogged catalytic converter can also cause this problem.
SOURCE: i have a roaring sound coming from the front end of my f150
Is it 2wd or 4wd?
Check your wheel bearings.
Jack up the truck....... use jack stands....be safe.
Spin each front wheel and hold your hand on a suspension part close to the wheel to "feel" the bearing vibration/roughness.
One or both may feel and/or sound noisy.
If it is a 4x4 you could have a wheel bearing problem and/or a bad front differential bearing.
Also check the tires for rough tread areas as in cupping areas along the surface tread of the tires......this makes a heck of a noise too.

it may be the belt that connects to the alternator..either it is loose or may need tightening.
