I have a 2005 Malibu. When i drive my car for a matter of minutes, my temperature gauge goes halfway up then after a little while longer will go up a little more. i don't think that is normal. and if i drive it for about 20 minutes, turn it off for a minute then start it back up, it won't start up right away.
From 2003 to 2006 gm vehicles had instrument cluster gauge problems , stepper motor inside controls the gauge needle . How to repair GM Instrument Cluster Speedometer Gauge Stepper
All gauges affected . temp. speed , tach. fuel etc..
If a 12 year old car is overheating, the owner might want to have the cooling system checked. the correct amount of and type of coolant in the radiator. no leaks anywhere in the system. radiator cap and water pump working correctly belts are in good condition and with the correct tension. Engine block thermostat working properly and in good condition. No obstructions in the engine block or radiator. All the hoses are good and not leaking.

The sensor is right next to the heater hose outlet on the front passenger side of intake manifold. It is very small with an oval shaped connector going to it. I have the same engine.

There is a temperature sensor likely to be on your radiator. Make sure the connection is plugged in. Sometimes un-plugging and plugging it back will correct the issue. If not, you'll have to have some check if the sensor is faultly or if the electric wire is fault. You can check your fuse box. I don't think it's a fuse because other things on your instrument cluster would also not work.

sounds like you need to replace the thermostat.

it is most likey a sticking thermostat it either gets stuck closed or open in your case closed so collant isnt getting to the heater core and all you get is cold air blowing into the truck.
its a simple fix you can either do it your self or take it to a mechanic. now remember there are differnt thermostes so think about the climat you live in and get one according to that
