Your linkage is most likely bent or rusty and stuck. Get somone under the car and try shifting out of 4wd they should be able to see the linkage trying to move and help it along.

4 wheel drive won't disengage

There can be a linkage adjustment problem. Also you may need to remove transfer case housing to check the spring inside. There is a chain inside. That one should be checked for its tension. If those are ok you may need your transfer case get serviced.

I HAVE AN 1998 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. WHEN I DISENGAGE THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE. THE INDICATOR SWITCH IS TELLING ME THAT ITS STILL IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE.

If it is not still in 4 wheel drv then i wouldn't worry about it as long as you know that its out of 4 wheel drv.

Jeep stuck in low four wheel drive

Put the transmission in neutral, emergency brake off, foot off the brake pedal, now try shifting out of 4 wheel drive low. If that doesn't work, drive forward, and again do the above, trans. in neutral, roll to a stop, foot off brake, try to disengage. What you're probably experiencing is called drive shaft 'wind up', and it is very difficult to disengage, but do the above and it should shift out of 4 low. countrycurt0
