Check for the antennae connection. If you have serviced the radio recently, the antennae could have been knocked loose? The outside antennae could be damaged? These connections complete the circuit. Hope this helps.
It will better that you think of the cost involved in the process of changing then updating the engine to be registered . There are many engines that can suit but ideally the toyota new range for the Corolla model will be good.
I would suggest that you think of changing the car to a newer model that to invest in an old car which is almost 20 years old. You must take into account that newer issues on the suspension, brakes , steering will still remain and keep costing you more money.
