There is a switch on the parking brake handle or foot pedal,witch ever it has,this is more than likely the problem.

SOURCE: 1996 T-100 dash brake light will not go out

The brake fluid level sensor in the master cylinder is stuck in the lower position which completes the circuit to illuminate the light.. Try tapping lightly on the side of the reservoir to loosen it. If that does not help, you will need to replace the level sensor.

some smoke after a brake job is normal, just from the packing oil burning off. if it continues, maybe getting some rebuilt calipers from your local parts shop might be a good idea. no way a master is gonna make smoke at the wheels.

What if the 2000 dodge caravan break light comes on

If the BRAKE light comes on, and the parking brake is not engaged, it indicates a potentially very dangerous condition, where hydraulic pressure is lost in the system. IT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE IF THE BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATES, EVEN "ONCE IN AWHILE," WHEN DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL.

IT IS ALSO NOT SAFE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE IF THE BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATES WITH THE PARKING BRAKE DISENGAGED.

The cause for the issue may be:
  1. Bad master cylinder (most likely);
  2. Contaminated brake fluid (if the wrong kind of fluid was used);
  3. Bad wheel cylinder(s);
  4. Damaged brake line;
  5. Excessive wear on brake parts (such as pads and rotors);
  6. Defective brake pressure sensor.

My brake lights stay on after I turn off the car

Hello,

If the light is on all the time, it could mean you simply forgot to release the
parking (emergency) brake. The brake warning light remains on when the brake is set
as a reminder. If the brake warning light remains on when the parking brake is
released, then something is amiss.

In some cases, the brake warning light may remain on if the switch on the parking
brake pedal or lever is misadjusted. Nothing is wrong with the brakes and a simple
adjustment should fix the problem.

If the brake warning light comes on when you apply the brakes,
or is on continuously, it means that hydraulic pressure has been lost in one side
of the brake system or that the fluid level in the master cylinder is dangerously
low (due to a leak somewhere in the brake system).
In either case, the fluid level in the master cylinder should be checked.
Adding brake fluid to the master cylinder reservoir may temporarily solve the
problem. But if there's a leak, the new fluid will soon be lost and the warning
light will come back on.

Brake fluid leaks are serious because they may cause the brakes to fail!
So avoid driving the vehicle until the system can be inspected to determine what's
wrong. Leaks can occur in brake hoses, brake lines, disc brake calipers,
drum brake wheel cylinders or the master cylinder itself.
Wet spots at hose or line connections would indicate a leak that needs to be fixed.

Leaking brake fluid can also contaminate the brake linings,
causing them to slip or grab. The uneven braking action that results may cause the
vehicle to veer to one side when the brakes are applied. Brake shoes or pads that
have been contaminated with brake fluid cannot be dried out and must be replaced.

Hope this helps.

The dashboard parking brake light comes on while driving and I have checked to make sure the brake has been fully released. What could be the problem?? It doesn't stay on, it comes on and off.

Look at fluid level, some systems invoke the parking light for low fluid. I presume to confuse you. I think the thinking works like this: When you have full new brakes and full M/C by the time the M/C fluid gets consumes by prake pad consumption, the light goes off. If you replaced the front pads, the fluid gets pushed back into the M/C resovoir, and the light goes out. Bet that you are pretty close to needing pads, presuming no leaks or other issues.

Volkswagon Jetta, Brake warning light stays on.

Just for giggles... inspect the brake pads. The light is designed to come on when your brake pads are getting thin as well as low fluid level and emergency brake use.

The brake light comes on, but I have brakes and my brake fluid box is full. The light comes on after I start driving.

We are talking about the Brake Light and not the ABS Light or Parking Brake Light?
I am assuming there are no leaks.
I am also assuming you are not losing any Brake Fluid, regardless of no visible leaks?
Have you checked the condition of your Brake Pads?
When was the last time you had new Brake Pads put on? If they are worn down, the Brake Light will come on. Do not wait until you hear noise, then it is too late, the Rotors will be scored, and need of being turned or replaced.
There is a Brake Fluid Level Sensor located on the side of the Master Cylinder Reservoir. Check this connection, the locking clip on these breaks easily, causing a loose connection and triggering the light. Unplug this and check the electrical connects for corrosion and oxidation (white stuff) on both ends. Clean/scrap any of the of this off the metal connections. Replug and check operations.
I assume the Rear Brake Lights come on when you step on the Brakes; and go off when you release the Brakes?
If these (new pads, cleaning connections) do not fix the problem:
Start the Van, and with a Partner: pumping, then holding, and Releasing the Brakes, check the Fluid Level each time in the Master Cylinder. Is it falling below the Minimum Line of the Reservoir? This would indicate that all the Brake Pads are extremely low and is triggering the Brake Light to come on.
The other possibility is the Master Cylinder Reservoir Sensor is going bad. This is rare, but still a possibility.

95 sub emerg/parking brake light will not turn off

Only two things should normally activate the light:

Parking Brake engaged switch.

Low Fluid level in master cylinder.

I don't think you did any work to the Parking brake, but you should check it to be sure.

I believe that you would have double checked the fluid level, but please check it again.

Other things that could activate the light would be a worn or leaking master cylinder; improper brake fluid type; a damaged brake booster diphragm .

I have attached a link with excellent info on how a brake system works here.

Also, does the light always stay on, or only when you apply the brakes?
