SOURCE: We are replacing the fuel filter in a 98 pontiac

Assuming you mean replacing the fuel PUMP, the 2 wires are different guages. Connect the lighter wire to the lighter wire and the heavier wire to the heavier wire. If the new harness uses both the same size wires, the heavier wire on the vehicle side (solid black) is for the fuel pump ground. Lighter wire is for fuel guage sending unit.

SOURCE: the new connector for the fuel pump 99 Chevy

One wire will be a common ground.  Depending on how much fuel you have in the tank you should receive a voltage from about 5 to 9 volts from the common ground to the fuel gauge - the other is the live to the Fuel Pump, typically - your 4 wire situation may be two grounds - one to each - put a fuse 10amp fuse in-line or disconnect the pigtail from tank and test for voltages and Zero resistance which would be the same as if you put both probes from your tester together and the meter shows "1" - if there is a problem or resistance then the reading will be "0" or the resistance value.  Be sure to use low Ohms setting or you may not get any reading.
This is of course - general info, from which should lead you to the answer you seek.
Good luck.

Good luck.
There may be a ground that just connects to the tank itself - you can test for Ohms with a meter to determine if these are ground wires or must be determined.  Can check between negative to battery to

I replaced the fuel pump, harness, filter, distributor ,cap ,rotor, and relay. my 96 chevy suburban still doesnt start. i dont hear the fuel pump motor but the relay is working. dont know what to do n

BYM, Back Yard Mechanic...You will need a Mechanics Manual...Chilton's, Haines, or OEM...Look thru the wiring diagrams, BEFORE you start dicing, and splicing...as far as your real problem...did you replace the Ignition Control Module, that is inside the Distributor cap??? It's Black, and has several wires that attach to it...those are the 1st thing you want to look at, before you start messing with the fuel delivery system, Buy A New ICM, or 2, and replace it, it's good to keep a spare around (in your vehicle). You will need a 7 mm socket, w/extension, and obviously, a driver of some sort, ratchet, or nut driver type. Good Luck.

If it is the correct fuel pump - where it unplugged, it should just plug in where the old one did.

The wires should be grey, orange and black, purple, and a black wire. The purple goes to purple, grey to gray. The orange and black goes to the small black wire on your car harness and the black goes to the bigger black.
