My car shakes after applying brakes at high speeds of 60 to 70 MPH on my 2001 / IS300 lexus. I recently had the rotors turned and put on new break pads before this problem really became noticable. I removed the calabors and checked the rotor and break pads and they were in good condition. No slop in the front wheeles either. All steering rods seem to be tight with no play in them. It feels like the APS may be bad because when appling the breaks at the higher speeds, the breaks start pulsating at 60 to 70 MPH. When I take my foot off, everything is back to normal. Also, I had new tires and a wheel alinement done less then a month ago. Is there anyone that can help me out ???

.005 runout is enough to cause this. Micrometer the rotors with a dial indicator.

Hey Robert... its only shakes between 38 and 43 mph... hhmmmm.. does it shake more or less when you apply the brakes.. thinking the rotors might need turning.. this is not uncommon for older trucks.. if you get them turned, get new pads,, this is not a hard job... just time consuming and you need a second vehicle..(or friend) so you can take the rotors to your local auto shop to get turned... I use Oreilly's..get their lifetime pads and they usually turn the rotors for free...(sometimes)... bug/talk to the manager... -- repack the wheel bearings while you are in there...they have to come off to get the rotors off..

Warped brake rotors most likely cause. Other possibilities include wheel bearings, u-joints.

Your brake rotors are warped. The warped rotors are transmitting their side to side movement, to your steering wheel, when you apply the brakes. Have the rotors checked to see which one(s) is/are warped and have them replaced.

The problem lies in the front rotors. If the steering wheel is shaking without braking, then we need to break this up. If it's low speed(1-15 mph) then you have a tire that is coming apart. Highway speeds, you need the wheels balanced. If it's only while braking then you need to have the brakes inspected. If pad replacemnet is required, go for it. When they address the rotors, DO NOT TURN THEM ON A CONVENTIONAL LATHE. Honda REQUIRES them to be either turned on the vehicle(on the car lathe) or replaced. Then it comes down to quality. Always replace with the higher quality parts on these. If you do not, the problem will occur again, and the sme is true if you turn the rotors off of the car.

that seems like you have a warpped rotor. If you need an alignment your car will veer to one side of the road or the other when you let go of the steering wheel at those speeds. Another way to test your front brakes for braking problems is to let loose of the steering wheel at about 35 miles per hour and press the brake quite firmly. If your car really veers right or left then, you know your problem is in the brakes. As a note, about 70% of your braking power comes from front rotors. But the shaking you are describing sounds like you could use a brake job. Pads and rotors are very inexpensive to purchase and rotors these days are not worth having turned...just buy new ones. If you are somewhat mechinically inclined, you can do a complete pad and rotor job for about 150 bucks saving yourself hundreds of dollars vs. having someone do it for you. i do believe you mean the service brakes, and when pushing the brake pedal the truck shakes?

Pad transfer will cause uneven brake discs with humps on em. Every time you then step on the brake pedal you'll feel the pads going over the humps, causing the shakes.

The best way to get rid of this is to replace the disc brakes with new discs.
Remember to change the pads too.

I just changed the brake pads and rotors on my father's 2001 Trooper that he recently purchased because they were shaking just like your were.  He bought it from a mechanic shop and they had put new pads on it but it needed new rotors as well.  If there is noticable groving on the rotors and new pads are installed it can create shaking, sometimes severe, when the brakes are applied.  It sounds like this is what has happened with your vehicle as well.  That being said, I don't consider it a huge safety issue to drive it until you get it fixed, just know that your braking will not be optimal and that it will take you longer to stop than if the brakes were working properly.  All that being said, get them fixed ASAP so you don't have to worry about it.  Who wants to mess with safety right?  Good luck, hope this helps!
