Try this link and see if it helps. The OEM cap and/or the two "flaps" in the filler neck are allowing air to enter the system, and your car's computer reads it as an "evap" failure thus the Check Engine light and the associated trouble code in the computer.

SOURCE: 1966 mustang engine cranks but wont start

Guide to starting a dead horse!
1- Spray a little starter fluid down the carbuerator. If it tries to fire, your timing and ignition is probably OK. This could indicate a carb or fuel pump problem.
2- If it doesn't fire, check out the points, condenser, coil, distributor cap and rotor. Look for condensation inside the cap. Check that the high tension wire from the coil to distributor is in good shape and not touching the engine or any brackets, etc.
3- Verify that your timing is correct. You may have a timing train problem (Worn or broken).
4- The distributor may have come loose and changed positions. Check for proper timing.
5- It may be a compression problem. If it has set long enough for the oil that coats the cylinder walls to drain down, you won't have enough compression to allow firing. Check your compression and if this seems to be the case, remove the spark plugs and squirt a little Marvel Mystery oil, or similar light weight oil into each cylinder. When it starts, it will smoke for a few minutes, but that will go away.
Hope this helps and if not, get back to me.
Have a super day!
Ron

SOURCE: 2011 check engine light

1st of all never bring it to a dealer--mechanics generally don\'t have experience--they don\'t pay enough for the good guys. It probably needs a new module or sensor-running a data stream with factory tools by a good shop works. And it\'s best to use new parts with electronics.

There is no sleep mode. Are you sure you ran out of gas? Are you sure you put GAS in the tank and not diesel?

Mazda tribute problems

The indicator is actually telling you there is a leak in the evap system. This can be caused by a loose cap, on cars that have them; but it will come on for any leak in the system. The capless fuel pipe may not be sealing, or any hose in the system may be leaking. Check the small hoses connected to the engine intake manifold--one of those is the purge line, which is part of the evap system. The rest of the system includes a charcoal canister and a vent line from the fuel tank. There may also be a vent valve connected to the canister. A leak in any of these can cause the light to stay on and may affect the operation of the engine, if the leak is large.

Ran out of gas in my 2002 mustang, put a gallon in it and it will not start....what can i do?

Try and turn your key from run to off run to off without cranking your engine to pressure you fuel lines and pump... you may also need more then one gallon in your fuel tank.

Car ran out of gas. then after i put gas in it runs **** and check engine lite comes on it runs bad it goes off it runs perfect.it goes bak n forth all day.whats wrong

is your mustang fuel injection? if so sounds like it light be a dry injector unit? if it not then you will be looking at dust and stuff in you main injectors, always agood idea not to run out of juice as this allows the rubbish which sits at bottom of your tank to be sucked through. sorry to lecture but ruined few cars myself that way and not an easy fix.

1987 IROC, Ran out of gas,put gas in, now service engine light on

if you have high milieage you may have sucked in the gunk on the botton of your tank when you ran out of fuel check if you can hear the fuel pump running for about 2 sec with key on engine off if you hear nothing the problem is with your pump as they will burn out if they run dry for too long,if you hear the pump check for fuel pressure if pressure low check fuel filter to see if clogged by gunk from bottom of tank.
