Hi Susie, Turn on the head lights and get someone to observe them while trying to start. If they dim during trying to start, replace the battery. Regards John
Do any of the interior light work? Does the radio work? If the answer is no, then the first thing to check is the battery and its connections. If lights, radio and other things work, then you could have a problem with ignition switch, starter solenoid, starter or a wiring issue.
SOUND LIKE THE STARTER SOLENOID OR STARTER IS DEFECTIVE.REMOVE THEM HAVE THEM CHECKED OUT.AT ANY AUTO PARTS PLACE.REMINDER TURN OFF RADIO SO YOU WONT LOSE RADIO CODE WHEN DISCONNECTING BATTERY.
this problem is caused by a defective starter soenoid, the heavy starter electrical contacts are burned/erroded, you can either replace the satater motor or replace the solenoid which is mounted on the starter.
You're alternator has gone bad and the vehicle was running on battery power. The "clicking" sound is your now dead battery that does not have enough power to turn over the starter. You might also want to check your power steering pump for leak. This is a know problem with early LS400s and will most likey be the cause of the alternator failure. I just dropped $1050.00 to fix the very same promblems you have.
