I should have said, after sitting for a time say 3 days or so my 1992 f350 has an issue with the brakes. When you step on the brake pedal it seems to drw itself down and apply the brakes on its own.The pedal does slowly return to off position. After doing this a few times the brakes return to normal. Could this be a problem with the power booster? Or any other ideas?

Probably the slave cylinder. That's usually how they behave when they are no good.

Adjust your rear brake shoes. Then rebleed the system. Start at the master cylinder Bleed master first then the wheel furthest away from the master (right rear then left rear then right front then left front. Do that and your pedal should be good.

check your brake booster and also make sure the rear shoes are adjusted up where they belong. If they are not adjusted up the brake pedal will go farther and farther toward the floor and get spongier as they go farther out of adjustment. If you adjust them up and they back down again change your self-adjusters and springs. They are readily available at your local parts store.

SOURCE: 1997 FORD F250 XLT 4WD - Had a hard brake pedal with hardly any brakes while standing on them. Replaced booster and wheel cylinders at same time now the pedal is mushy and no brakes.

They need to be bleed again all four wheels but your vacuum pump may be bad since diesels don't have vacuum then have to have a pump, check that the booster one way check valve is good if you can blow thew it both ways it's bad, to bleed start from the wheel farthest away from the master cylinder pump the brakes 5 times and hold down then open the bleed valve keep doing this until you get clear fluid out of each wheel once you have done that if it is still mushy and you know you have vacuum re bleed with engine running this will help push more out with power assist. most like the hard brake pedal had to do with no vacuum check out the pump. You may also have to reset the 2 way check valve if you need help with this let me know.

Is this truck a Powerstroke Diesel, or a 351/5.8 or 460/7.5 Gas engine? If it is the powerstroke, check the Vacuum pump on the engine, this provides the power assist for the brake booster, it could be going bad from sitting. sitting is very hard on a vehicle, as moisture and thermal cycles do a lot of unseen damage. Brake fluid is one of those components affected by moisture and thermal cycles. If it is one of the Gas engines, it may well be the booster, but flush out all the brake fluid first, bleeding from the right hand rear wheel first, then left rear, right front then left front. Use only new fluid from a sealed container, discard open brake fluid containers after six months in humid climates, and a year in dry climates.

Sometimes a caliper or wheel cylinder will sieze, usually temporarily. This puts twice the amount of pressure on the other side of the system. Recommendation: turn your car on, take off the parking brake, and press really hard on the brake pedal. This will usually break the offending piston free, and you will be good to go for a long time. If this doesn't work, then you'll have to figure out which one it is, and change it out. Hope it works for you.

when you replace the master cylinder, your are supposed to pump it up manually before you install it. If you don't, you'll have to sit there and pump the brake pedal a couple of thousand times as one almost microscopic air bubble at a time escapes the pressure tube and back fills with fluid. once you can push the pedal repeatedly without any bubbles escaping into the reservoir, then bleed the brakes. Starting with the farthest, usually the Right Rear and work your way up. Make sure you keep the fluid level topped off. If it sucks air once, you have to start all over.
