Check gauge light can come on for a number of different things, from Low fuel to low oil pressure to high engine temperatures. When the light comes on check all the gauge's and see whats causing it, one or more of the gauge's will be showing an issue, Low fuel or low oil pressure, Low battery power. Any of the mentioned things can cause it... Figure out whats causing it then you can remedy the situation...
Well the engine shut off its normal for lights to come on, That's basically a way to test the light bulbs to make sure they are working, I would be more worried about why the truck shut down, Have it serviced by a professional, Its possible that it only needs a tune-up or maybe just the fuel filter replaced, there are a number of different things that could cause it to shut down

I was idling at a traffic light, the 2004 chevy trailblazer suv turned of by itself and the check gages light came on, not the check engine light, but the check gages light. i immediately turned the truck completely off and back on. the truck was fine but the gas gage took some time to reach full peek but then eventually did after about 3 miles of driving. what do u think the problem is?

Look for which one of your gauges that are not working. You may need to take it to the dealer to find out exactly why. Could be a bad sensor somewhere.
