SOURCE: replacing front struts on 2000 monte carlo

If you're asking how to, it's not overly hard with a spring compressor. First loosen the front lugnuts. Then jack the car up, apply the parking brake and chock the back wheels so it cant move. Lower the car back down onto jackstands and then remove the wheel.

Remove the brake assembly and rotor as if you were doing a brake job, except dont tie the caliper to the spring, tie it off to the A arm. Undo the 2 large nuts connecting the strut to the knuckle, but dont remove the bolts yet. Put your spring compressor on and tighten it down. Open the hood, and undo the 3 nuts holding the strut in place. Go back under and push the 2 bolts out, and the entire thing will come off in your hands.

Swap the springs over, wipe down the strut brace on the inside and reassemble everything using these instructions going backwards.

Drive the car to the shop of your choice for an alignment and you're done.

I have a 2000 Avalon xls. My question is on the right rear strut has came threw into my rear seat, I'm lost on what was holding it in place?? it looks like the boot that has the three bolts that...

Sounds like the strut mount has let go. Your best bet is to find what is called a quick struts. This will be a complete strut assembly with spring and munt completely assembled. They will run you a couple hundeed a piece. Simply unbolt the old strut and bolt in the new strut and you should be good to go. A strut mounting kit is also available. To replace this the strut will need to be removed. The. The spring will need to be compressed. The strut can then be removed. Then the spring will be uncompressed. The parts replaced. The spring compressed and the strut reinstalled, You will need to bring the strut to a shop to have the spring compressed. Quick struts are way easier and more DIY friendly.

I need to know whether I can change the rear struts on my 97 Lumina at home in the garage. My regular mechanic implied that this was not a home think to do and the car would also need a rear alignment....

Hi Nick , I also am also Lumina owner , the struts should be a snap , it has a spring around the strut, you will need a tool to compress the spring & make it safer to remove the strut assembly , the upper mount has either 2 nuts or 2 bolts holding it to the car , the 2 Lower bolts holding the strut to the spindle/control arm shouldn't have eccentrics in them so the alignment shouldn't change. , do 1 side at a time and make sure you use safety stands.

On a side note you may be able to purchase a Quickstrut complete strut assembly (Strut/Spring/Upper mount). making your job a lot Faster !
