I'm not sure who posted for me before, but something to know is that the cruise control won't work on the Crown Vics if it is going less than 25 miles per hour. For me it wouldn't activate until after 30, it's simple, but there is a mininum.

The horn and Cruise Control are all connected to the Number 17 fuse, my guess would be that the fuse is blown.

  • Anonymous Nov 16, 2009

YES, I had the same exact problem with my 88' Vic when my horn was sticking, after pulling the #17 fuse, the controls on my steering wheel were disabled. I can scan the Ford Owner's Operation manual for you if you'd like.

But experience and my owner's manual tell me different from what Fang says.

If your horn doesnt work either you have to remove the steering wheel and there is the connector for the horn/cruise control. If nothing broken there, check the clock spring too!

SOURCE: 1988 Ford Crown Vic Lost Cruise Control

Although I don't think the cruise is an issue for safety, reach in under hood , or in grille area and find your horn(s) and just pull the connector off them temporarily, so they won't blow & put fuse back in and see if cruise starts to work again. It's not unusual for circuits to be labeled wrong or not at all in fuse panels. Then you can turn your attention to horn problem.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the help! and especially checking back in. However i didn't find out about it until now. Horn was a broken switch, all power on #17 fuse."

My cruise controll has stopped working and my dashboard lights have stopped working also. All of my idiot lights work including the turn signals. I just cant see the speed at night! Please help

The Dashboard light dimmer control is probably stopped working because one of the tiny eletronic bits inside it has died. A temporary fix is to remove the connecting plug on the rear of the unit and put a bridging wire across the terminals. The cruise control problem could have several causes. They operate on engine vacuum so check the hose going to the cruise control unit in the engin bay from the inlet manifold. If the hose is cracked or hard there will not be enough vacuum to operate the cruise control.

Purchased 1996 Ford Crown Victoria. On driving it home the cruise control went out. Tried to reset and won't work, as well as the horn. What is the problem?

The horn relay is located toward the front of the engine. It is located just behind the radiator overflow reservoir and attached to the inner fender next to two other relays. It is the only one without a plastic cover over the top of it. FYI, our Crown Vic horn didn't blow, and the cruise didn't work. I changed the relay and still no horn. I decided to check the horns themselves. Found wires disconnected from terminals. Touched wire to horn terminal and horn blew incessantly. (previous owner had disconnected horn rather than diagnose why) Pulled the horn "button" from steering wheel and disconnected the wire leads and horn quit. Disassembled the "button" assembly. Foam had degraded over time between the contacts. (Ford has discontinued this part). Cleaned and replaced foam with Scotch foam mounting squares with holes punched out over contacts (2 layers thick). Re-assembled and viola! Horn and cruise control both work! Relay was bad as was horn button.

Have a 1996 crown vic and the horn did work now it doesnt work along with the cruise control my fuese under the dash are good but not mark

If the horn nor the steering wheel mounted cruise control switches work, it is likely that the problem is the contacts that are in the steering wheel and the steering column that send the signal for these switches. You have a circular type contact that rotates with your wheel, and a stationary circular contact on you steering column that the steering wheel fits over. Good Luck. I hope you find this very helpful!

How do i disable the horn on my 1988 crown victoria

Remove the horn relay.

To find the horn relay:
"look under the hood on the left, front side of the car there's a somewhat triangle shaped box with fuses in it. It has 1 latch @ the top(left side of the box) & 2 latches @ the bottom(right side of the box). Open & pull off top. Under top will be names of the fuses & relays you will need to take it out and take it with you to the parts store so they can match it up with one they have they may have to order it call first. "
