starter will not engage, enigine does not turn over, can be rolled off to start with the clutch but will not start with teh key

  • consuming805 Apr 19, 2009

i had the battery tested and it is good, if I jumper the starter relay pins under the hood the starter will engage.
I have also tested the clutch switch and checked for power on either wire at the switch while turning the key. no power indicated.

    shack,
what should i look for at the steering column?
I checked the conections and even took the key cylinder out and inspected it and teh rod going to the switch. no damages there.

Turn the key on and see if you can hear the fuel pump kick in. It will only run for about 3 to 5 seconds.

Check the Starter Solenoid mounted near the battery.Check it out in the dark...have someone try to start it and see if it sparks at the solenoid.connections may be loose. Also check/wiggle wiring harness to starter.

Blown fuses

sounds like a bad ground somewhere or check your ground wire on your starter and even your igniton switch cause if they go bad then your car either wont start or wont stay running

2001 chevy blazer wont start starter and all wires are good. what else could it be?

Take your battery to a battery shop and have the cold cranking amps (CCA) checked. Your battery can read on any multimeter but if the CCA is not there, you need a new battery. If the CCA is good then check your starter relay. Relays do stick occasionally. Swap it out with another relay with a similar amp rating if available. However, more than likely the CCAs are not there.

2001 s430 bought new battery car wont start

Check for a good/clean connection on your battery terminals.Make sure it's on good & tight, then try to start the car - if that's not it. Get a jump, then go to Auto Zone, O'Reilley's, etc and get the battery & the starter checked. I'm betting it's either a poor connection, bad battery or your starter is going out (or possibly the starter relay switch) Start with your connections - that's the easy fix.

Wont turn over

The starter is most likely the problem, tap on the starter lightly with a hammer while trying to start the engine, dont get run over doing this it will take two people,if the engine starts, the starter needs replacing.

2001 Ford Explorer Sport wont start

Even though I bought the vehicle new, there was an aftermarket security system installed. The system had a bad diode, so i removed the system and reconnected the factory wires.

2.5 jeep wangler 1999 wont start .starter checks out ok

Could be a bad connection between the battery and starter. Starter solenoid, or neutral safety switch if it is standard transmission.
Check for power at the solenoid.

WOnt run over - battery good - can turn it over but jumping the starter

if the battery is good and you jump the starter she should run otherwise you may have a sensor issue, try to get a hold of a code reader and see if any codes have popped up..
