Front bolt removal on control arm

I have a 1996 Geo Prizm and the inside control arm bolt (across from ball joint) is a long bolt yet the transmission is in the way when trying to remove it. Is there a trick in removing this bolt so that I can replace the control arm? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  1. Remove the wheel cover.

  3. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  4. Elevate and safely support the car.
  5. Remove the front wheel.

  7. Use a ball joint separator such as GM J-24319-01 or equivalent to remove the tie rod ball joint from the knuckle.
  8. Remove the bolts holding the brake caliper bracket to the steering knuckle. Use stiff wire to suspend the caliper out of the way; do not let the caliper hang by its hose. Remove the brake disc.
  9. Using a puller such as GM J-25287 or equivalent, push the axle from the hub.
The Prizm axle can be separated from the hub using a brass or plastic hammer. Nova requires the use of the puller.
  1. Use a slide hammer and appropriate end fitting (GM J-2619-01 and J 35762 or equivalents) to pull the driveshaft from the transaxle. Remove the shaft from the car.
To install:
  1. Install shaft into transaxle. If necessary, use a long brass drift and a hammer to drive the housing ribs onto the inner joint.
  2. Install the shaft into the wheel hub.
  3. Install the lower control arm to the lower ball joint. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 59 ft. lbs.
  4. Install the tie rod end to the steering knuckle and tighten the nut to 36 ft. lbs.
  5. Install the brake disc; install the brake caliper and tighten the bolts to 65 ft. lbs.
  6. Install the wheel.
  7. Install the hub nut and washer.
  8. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  9. Tighten the wheel lugs to 76 ft. lbs. Tighten the hub nut to 137 ft. lbs.
  10. Install the nut, cap, cotter pin and washer. Install the wheel cover.

Rt front axle broke how to repair

If there is no other damage aside from the outer CV joint being out.

1. Jack car up and support on jack stand on the affected side.
2. Remove wheel
3. Remove center hub nut
4. Turn wheels all the way to one side or the other. This is to gain access to the lower ball joint. One way will be easier than the other depending on how the bolt is installed.
5. Remove lower ball joint bolt and nut
6. Separate the ball joint by using a large pry bar or pipe to push the control arm down and hit side of joint with hammer.
7. Once joint has released pry down to free control arm from ball joint shaft.
8. Now tap the outer cv joint part still trapped in the hub out
9. Remove remaining axle from transmission by using a pry bar to pry it out of the transmission.
10. Reinstall new axle into transmission and then start into hub. Make sure to shove axle firmly into transmission so as to get past the C-clip lock.
11. Pry lower control arm down to allow the ball joint to be reassembled. Slip ball joint shaft back into control arm.
12. Reinstall bolt and nut
13. Install hub nut
14. Install wheel

How to change front wheel bearings on a 1996geo prism

To change the bearings on the front of the prizm, you will need to remove the steering knuckle unless you have the means of an on car bearing press, such as a "tomcat". You will have to remove the wheel, caliper, rotor, outer tie rod end nut, axle nut, lower ball joint mounting bolts, steering knuckle to strut mount bolts. press the hub from the knuckle assembly, remove internal snap ring that retains bearing and press the bearing out the other side of the knuckle. Reverse proceedure to install. You will need an alignment once you are done.
Good luck

I'm having problems removing front axles to a 91 geo Metro. Any suggestions would be very halpful

Getting enough space between the transmission and steering knuckle requires either hoisting the engine and transmission several inches or dropping the lower ball joint. A word of caution on removing the ball joint - the keeper bolt above the ball joint must be removed for the ball joint shaft to come out. Also be careful not to rip rubber boot dust cover on the ball; replacements are hard to find. Unstake the splindle nut and remove it; they are generally very hard to get loose. I suggest an impact wrench, or at least a long 1/2" drive breaker bar. Use a pry bar between the transmission housing and the CV joint to pop the inside end of the shaft out of the transmission; it takes some pressure to pop the snap-ring, but you won't break it.
