When you start talking about catalytic converters it become a nightmarish issue, plus a huge legal one as well. Federal emissions laws state that all motor vehicles built after a certain date pass the federal emissions standards. I can't remember the year exactly but it was in the late 70's in believe. Long story short. You can't just cut it off and then put a straight pipe back in its place. Plus it has O2 sensors either on the upstream or downstream side. Depending a few factors. Check to see how much exhaust is coming out of the tail pipe (restrictions or clogged). Whatever you do? Do NOT try and cool it down when it's that hot. It will cause all the combs inside to break away or shatter (implode) inside the cat and all the internal pieces will clog the muffler up. Then you will need a new cat and muffler. But it sounds like its diffidently and restriction problem. For example; what goes in the engine, must come out. There could be other issue as well but not nearly as likely. The other possibilities are fuel related or you are just running the he11 out of it. I'm sure any local muffler shop could diagnose it very easily. And I'm sure they wouldn't be nearly as expensive as a repair shop or dealership. Hope it helps.

if vehicle has less than 200,000 kms then i think cat is ok ,check the O2 sensors with a automotive meter rather than reading the obdii ,which i cannot do anyway in europe but at least you will know if they work or not their are two O2 sensors on each cat one before the and one after ,unless this is a high mileage vehicle i dont think the cats will be gone

Location of bank1 sensor1 99 Pontiac bonneville

Bank 1 is always the same side as the number one cylinder. Bank two is the opposite side of the engine. Sensor 1 is always before the catalytic converter. Sensor 2 is always after the catalytic converter.

Catalytic converter turns red hot on my 2002 ford escape

The cherry red is probably due to raw gasoline being burned in the converter. Since the engine isn't running right (and I'm surprised you didn't say the Check Engine light was on), there seems to be some kind of valve timing issue or perhaps a burnt valve that is causing at least one cylinder to not fire and thus expel the fuel/air mixture into the exhaust stream. This can be confirmed with a compression check of the cylinders. If they are all low, then there is a problem with valve timing, possible a jumped belt/chain. If only one cylinder is low, then a burnt or broken valve is more likely.

My car just cut off, when try to restart it spits back thru breather ,runs a little but willnot accelerate, also when it does finally start, cataylic converter gets cherry red

the cherry red catalytic converter is the sign of a complete blocked cat and needs immediately replacement. The starting problems you have are due to this situation. Change the cat and you will see improvement.

I have injector pulse.switched coils .still miss fire on 2/4/6/ converter is cherry red.

If the catalytic converter is cherry red there are only a few things that will cause this, extreme over-fueling causing excess unburned fuel to enter the exhaust and overheat the catalytic converter. You will need which cylinder(s) is misfiring, you can ID the problem cylinder by checking the diagnostic OBD2 fault codes, you will have a P03XX in memory, with the XX's being the cylinder number that is misfiring. The possibilities are this, you have an injector that is stuck open or a low cylinder compression issue or a very lean condition that keeps the fuel from burning like a big vacuum leak. Also address any other fault codes found in the OBD2 fault code testing. DO NOT CONTINUE TO RUN THE ENGINE TO THE POINT THE CATAYLUTIC CONVERTER TURNS CHERRY RED! YOU WILL RUIN A VERY EXPENSIVE PART IF YOY HAVEN'T ALREADY
