Fuel and Temp Gauge go on and off intermitently

I have a 1988 Mazda 323. While driving sometimes, My lights will turn on, then the fuel, temp, and blinkers will not function. However the backlight for the dash, speedo, headlights, tailights, brake lights still work as they should. I have no clue what the problem is, any ideas?

Dont listen to this idiot jhudes . I would recomend if you have access to a salvage yard that you would try replacing the circuit board behind the gauges and you might aswell replace the gauges while your at it. I just did this in my 88 mazda 323 when the temp and fuel gauge and left blinker quit working but the dash still lit up and the speedometer still worked. I found out my circuit board was corroded after repalcing it and the gauges it all works good. If this doesnt work check the fuel and temp senders.

Faulty wiring for the lights, and blinkers....

broken gears for the fuel and temp gauge...

just get rid of the damn car, get a Civic of the same year.

I was given a 323 once, unsiezed the rear brakes (the idiot left the thing parked with the e-brake on all winter), then sold it for beer money.

I have a 1988 Mazda 626. What are the correct resistance values for the temp. gauge sensor at various heat levels? The official service manual doesn't give them. Thanks.

The Autodata fuel injection manual provides those figures for the engine management temp. sensor and I think I have seen them in the Haynes repair manual.

The temp. gauge sensor values I have never seen because it is generally accepted the electrical temp. gauge isn't a gauge but an indicator and therefore doesn't need to be accurate.

If you had the correct figures it is a bit of a faff suspending the sensor and an accurate thermometer in cold water and heating it slowly and monitoring the temperature and resistance. Mostly a replacement sensor is so inexpensive it isn't worth the effort.

Ford used to supply different sensors so the gauge (indicator) could be calibrated more closely - so it was around halfway at normal working temperature, but Ford seemed to be the only one that needed calibrating...

In the case of incorrect reading that isn't corrected by a replacement sensor, the supply voltage to the gauge should be checked to ensure it is being regulated accurately to the correct voltage - I know of only two standard voltages (10 volts and 5 volts) but there might be others.

Heater not working. temp gauge not working

It sounds like you simply have a bad thermostat that is stuck open. I would replace that first, it's cheap. Make sure the coolant is topped up properly after you change it.

My Mazda turns over, i know the starter works and i've checked the spark plugs and they are getting spark. i was told that it probably has something to do with the fuel. the car has been sitting for a...

try some starting fluid. just spray it in the air filter box while someone turns it over.
fuel can go bad if it sets too long. the more fuel that was in there sometimes lasts longer. you may have to drain the tank and add some fresh fuel.
