The "Check Engine Light" is just a light. An indication of something else being wrong. It's that thing that's wrong that can cause you a problem, or not... It depends what turned it on. They are mostly for emissions, i.e. pollution controls for the engine. LOL! Like pulling off your catalytic converter. So, the light won't hurt your engine, but what made the light come on in the 1st place could, depending on what that is/was. P.S. You can't get inspected without the CAT on there.

I have a 2006 Dodge Dakota and the cat monitor won't set.

Make sure it has the correct thermostat temperature, 3/4 tank of fuel. After it reaches operating temp, drive at 55mp for at least 5 min. 99% of the time this will do it. Good luck

Engine light flashing and whole steering column shacks when put in drive.

You most likely have a non firing cylinder causing the shake and the raw gas from the non firing cylinder is going into the catalytic converter. It is detected and causing the flashing check engine light.
A flashing check engine light means REPAIR NOW!

Engine runs good in drive, excelerates good, and idles good in park @ neutral but idles rough when in gear @ stopped

Thoroughly inspect Air Intake Assembly, There is a Vacuum Leak. Which is Causing Low Compression In Engine. A Simple Compression Test, Remove Air Filter, Remove Intake Extension. You should see Throttle Aucuator, Throttle Body, Mounted above Intake Manifold. Throttle Preassure Sensor TPS, On the side of the Throttle Plate, is the Idle Air Control Switch, this mechanism is a tiny motor than when activates twists the throttle plate open and closed, if plate does not close all the way in idol, this will result in low compression in engine.
IF Air Intake assembly Checks Out.
Investigate exhaust manifold, and clogged catalytic converter.
When shining light through cat converter, light visibility can be emitted and seen through converter. IF no light Visible, converter is dirty, Try Air To Blow Out, Or new Converter.

This will get you started on diagnoses,

Is it safe to drive whilst the yellow engine symbol is on the dashboard?

If it is the check engine light, Yellow light that looks like a engine, or may say "Check engine", Yes, it is safe to drive until you can get it checked. As long as the vehicle is driving normal. If the light starts flashing, DO NOT DRIVE it. A flashing check engine light means a misfire and could cause a fire due to raw fuel going down the exhaust into the cat converters.

I have a 2002 Dodge Stratus 3.0, when accelerating the engine chugs and engine light flashes. I heard it's a bad catalytic converter, is this true?

A plugged converter will cause a NO power situation where the vehicle is unable to expell exhaust gasses and cause poor acceleration. A flashing engine light is the result of a misfire. ( spark plug/coil/injector/wiring ). The engine should still be able to accelerate but will have a noticeable hesitation while doing so

98 ford windstar...service engine light comes on..then it begins to flash, when flashing the power seems to drop, it runs very rough. when coming to a stop or slow turn it may cut off. occasionaly when...

There is only thing will cause the check engine light to flash when you are driving and that is your catalyst converter is over heating and that is very dangerous if you continue to drive the van and the check engine light is flashing there is a very real possibility your van can catch on fire. What causes the catalyst converter to get hot is that raw fuel is being dumped into the exhaust system. That system can get so hot that it will glow cherry red it’s easier to see it at night. Please make sure and are expecting your problem correctly and if you are take it to a shop because you have more than one problem and the van is not safe to drive

Flashing check engine light

Flashing is bad, the engine is misfiring....you may have already damaged the cat converter by driving that way. Get it repaired before more damage is done.

Check Engine Light!

Yes your cat will cause it to come on...
There is a sensor before the cat that measures the emissions from your headers, then there's another sensor after your cat that measures the emissions after it passes through your cat. a faulty cat will cause the sensor to register differently triggering the light. Driving with a broken cat can cause serious damage to your engine as it also alters the backpressure
