The sensor is on the rear of your engine next to the firewall on the 5.0 looking at the egr valve just to the right of it, has two small bolts holding it on and holding the stamped steel bracket for its up against

I believe the sensor that you are looking for is on the drivers side of the engine. If you have a 4.0 SOHC engine or a 5.0 engine the wiring will be the same. You will have a brown with a white tracer, a brown with a light green tracer, and a grey with a red tracer to the sensor. If you you have a 4.0 EI then you will have a Brown with a white tracer and 2 brown with a light green. If you follow the 2 tubes coming up from your exhaust manifold you should be able to locate your sensor it will have to tubes or hoses going to it from your exhaust manifold. Good luck.

I have po401 code that show up what shall I look for to fix this problem

There are two tubes from the Exhaust to a sensor called the DPFE, make sure they do not leak.

Unplug the wires to it, make sure the terminals are not corroded, clean them anyway, try it again.

Replace the DPFE sensor if no good, also replace both tubes (hoses) as they will most likely break when you take them off.

On vehicles that are no well maintained you also wany to remove the EGR valve and make sure the ports are not clogged.

How do you locate the egr pressure sensor in 2003 mercury grand marquis?

First you need to know what to look for. Here's a link to a auto part web site: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/details/QQMercuryQQGrand_MarquisQQMotorcraftQQEGR_ValveQQ20032011QQMICX2060.html

The EGR valve takes exhaust gases and inserts them into the intake. Generally the EGR is near the center of the engine toward the back. It should be connected to the intake manifold and a pipe that comes from the exhaust manifold. It's not terribly difficult to change.

1999 mercury sable engine code p1744,p0401. Failed e check. EGR looks new, replaced egr solenoid then cleared codes. what more can i do about the p0401 code and the p1744 code Thanks

for p0401:
In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.
Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open.
Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits.
Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model).
Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one).
Replace the EGR valve.

Just bought a 2002 Mercury Sable LS, I brought it to Ford/Mercury repair to get a full diagnostic, they said I need to change the DPFE sensor, which some people say it's the same as the EGR sensor, but...

You will need to get the parts from the dealer.

What engine?

the EGR valve is generally located on the backside of the intake plenum near the throttle body. There will be a metal pipe that goes in between the EGR valve and the exhaust manifold. If you follow that pipe you will run into to rubber looking hoses. the DPFE sensor will be on the other end of those two hose. The hoses are two different diameters as well as the fittings that they attach to. Make sure you have the right hose going to the right fitting.
