SOURCE: P0420 code

This means that the secondary O2 sensor detects that the catalytic converter isn't working as efficiently as it should.
This engine code can be triggered by any one of the following:

1.) The catalyst in the catalytic converter is cracked, clogged, or otherwise damaged.
2.) The secondary O2 sensor is malfunctioning.
3.) There is an exhaust leak.
4.) The computer unit is faulty.

SOURCE: Check engine light is on. Code is showing P0420.

This code means the downstrean (behind) O2 sensor determines a reduced level of effectiveness in the cat. converter-it may not be 'lighting off' (600+ degrees) to burn any hydrocarbons left over from the combustion process. I can be that the cat is bad, or there is an exhaust leak before the cat, or the sensor itself is bad. You can do a visual inspection to determine if there is a leak, and use a scanner to see if the O2 sensor is working properly. It should read a fairly steady voltage and not switch nearly as fast as the upstream O2 sensor. The downstream O2 sensors only purpose is to monitor the cat-you might try clearing the Check Engine Light first to see if it comes back. Then you should consider contacting your dealer since you may be covered under an extended warranty that they have to put on emission devices.

My 2005 chevy equinox keeps showing problem code P0420 How do I fix this problem?

0 2 sensor near the catalytic converter or

replace the catalytic converter

The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar.

P0420 NISSAN - Catalytic Converter Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1

The most common cause for the OBDII code P0420 on Nissan vehicles is the three way catalytic converter Bank 1 has reached the end of its useful life.. Since this is a very expensive part you need the code fully diagnosed as some other things like exhaust leaks or poor engine tune can cause it as well

2001 Toyota Sienna CEL displayed code P1150 & P0420 what could be the problem

Mine is a 2001 Sienna LE. I got the P0420 code and the dealer want to replace an engine control computer for $1600. I've found posts that say you can replace your oxygen sensors, which still costs around $100 each. The P0420 seems to be emissions related. When my check engine light comes on, I run the highest grade, no ethanol gas, and usually within a couple of tanks, the light goes off again. The last time it happened about 2 wks ago, I put in the 93 octane no ethanol premium and a can of Seafoam and within a half a tank, the light went out. Your problem might be more serious, and I don't know what the 1150 code is, but so far that's worked for me.

Code P0420

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

There is one 02 sensor in front of the catalytic converter (called upstream), and one behind it (downstream). When the engine is warmed up and running normally the upstream oxygen sensor reading fluctuates and the downstream one is fairly steady. In the case where both readings are fairly steady, a P0420 check engine light code is set.

Possible Causes:
Oxygen (O2) sensor not working correctly
Damaged or leaking exhuast (pipe, manifold, catalytic converter)
Damaged catalytic converter

Check engine light on;engine codes p0420 and p0773

I looked up the codes you posted.
P0420 is showing a bad oxygen sensor on bank #1, the one down by the catalytic converter.
P0773 is an electrical problem with the shift solenoid E.
A bad oxygen sensor would cause lower fuel milage.
