I have a P reg VW Golf 16vSE Auto with power steering. Lately I have noticed that occasionally when I turn to the right, everything goes stiff with the steering. Then it is ok for a while. Any ideas I could try before I have to go to the expense of a new steering rack which is what the mechanic suggested!

First off with it being occasional, not sure what you mean by that. Once a day, once a week, several times a day?
The reason I ask is if you could leave it at shop/station and they could drive it and experience it they would be better able to advise you.
anyway get a second opinion.
I say this cuz The power steering system is quite foolproof: either it gives boost or it doesn't. It is extremely rare that it would randomly start to steer hard to the left or to the right.

SOURCE: x reg vw golf, engine light constantly on

What happend before the check engine light came on?

Does your exhaust smell like rotten eggs?
If so, this is a faulty o2 sensor.
If not I woul suspect an emission component failed.
either way you need to have a scan tool applied to the car next time it comes on, then you will be able to tell better what it is you need to fix.

Most probably that can happened because of battery fault.( Weak battery) if not need to check with vehicle scanner for electronic side.

SOURCE: i have an 05 reg golf with elec power steering,

Check the wiring harness connector to make sure you didn't knock it off. Also, you can try disconnecting your battery for a few minutes to see if it will reset itself.
I hope this helps.

Golf 3 gsx no powersteering , steering very stiff

Have you checked the tyre pressures. If you have no power steering a flat tyre will make tunning the wheels hard due to more turnning rsistance. Also a seized ball joint some where would also make steering hard.Hope this helps

Brakes

You need to get hold of a wind back tool. The pistons screw into the caliper and can be very stiff. Hahnes manual says you can use pliers but I've had no joy using that method!
