Are they taking advantage by replacing parts that dont need to be

Ijust bought a 94 chryslyer new yorker. It is over heating and I took it in to be inspected. They gave me a quote that has the following parts listed: timing Component card $176.79, A/C belt $19.00, Altenator belt $21.00, water Pump $78.55, Coolent $19.99, Hydraulic Tensioner $132.00. It then summerized by saying: water pump remove and replace 3.5L eng w/air cond $348.60....Total $795.93. My question is, is all of this neccesary? wouldn't you change the water pump first and see if that is the problem? Is there a special machine that says all of these things are specifically the problem? It seems to me that they are just replacing extra stuff. Please help me I am clueless and can't afford to replace all these things.

CMV9- Thank you for your help! What is a timing componet card? Is it the same thing as a timing belt? Why wouldnt they put the same tyming belt on after removal and installation? What is the Hydraulic Tensioner? Where does that come into the process of changing the water pump?

valk- Thanks for your help! Thats what I am thinking. The belts seem fine, cant they reuse them? It just seems like extra charges for procedures that are covered in labor cost when reusing the belts etc...
I just dont know anything about the tensioner and timing componet card.

any additional info would be greatly appreciated!

Yes this thedo need to replace most what they say. where your water pump is located it is highly recomended to replace the timing belt as well. a/c and alternator belt will need to be replace if the show wear or are streached. i am inclosing a diagram of what they have to do to get to the water pump so you have an idea of what they are going to be doing to your vehicle.

3.5L Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

CAUTION Do NOT open the radiator drain or the coolant pressure bottle cap with the system hot and under pressure or serious burns from coolant may occur.

  1. Place a drain pan under the radiator. Open the radiator drain located at the lower right side of the radiator. Do NOT use pliers to open the plastic drain.
  2. Remove the coolant pressure bottle cap and open the thermostat bleed valve.
  3. Remove the timing belt using the recommended procedure. It is good practice to turn the crankshaft until the engine is at TDC No. 1 cylinder, compression stroke (firing position). This aligns all the timing marks and serves as a reference point for all the work that follows.
  4. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and pump. Discard the O-ring seal.
  5. Clean the gasket sealing surfaces. Do NOT scratch the aluminum surfaces.
To install:
  1. Install a new O-ring and wet with clean coolant. Be sure to keep the new O-ring free of any oil or grease.
  2. Install the water pump and O-ring to the engine block.
  3. Install the retaining bolts and tighten to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).

  1. Rotate the pump and check for freedom of movement.
  2. Install the timing belt using the recommended procedure. Verify that all valve timing marks align. This is most important. An engine out-of-time will be seriously damaged when first started.
  3. Be sure that the radiator drain is closed. Open the thermostat bleed valve. Install a 1/4-inch clear hose about 48 inches long to the end of the bleed valve and the other end into a clean container. The intent is to keep coolant off of the drive belt(s).
  4. Slowly refill the coolant pressure bottle until a steady stream of coolant flows out of the thermostat bleed valve. Gently squeeze the upper radiator hose until all of the air is removed from the system.
  5. Close the bleed valve and continue to fill up the coolant pressure bottle to the proper level. Install the cap back on the bottle and remove the hose from the bleed valve.
  6. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and allow to run until normal operating temperature is reached.
  7. Check the cooling system for leaks and correct coolant level. Be sure that the thermostat bleed valve is closed once the cooling system has been bled of any trapped air.

a tensinor is what keeps your belts tight and able to move the pulleys of your engine to keep them moving. as of the timing component card i am going to have to look that up.

Have the shop show you why these parts are bad, if the belts are in good condition there is no need to replace them. they will be removed in the removal of the water pump so labor for taking them off and putting them back on will still be included in the replacement of the pump. check the belts for any signs of wear any cracks across the belt any sign of dry rot.
if you do have the parts replaced and any time you have parts replaced always ask for the old parts this way you can be sure that they did replace the parts they said they were going to. hope this helps some

Will 1987 Chrysler New Yorker parts fit on other

Yes they can, providing the engines are the same, 6 or 8 cylinder.
Try calling an auto parts store and ask them if they can give you a rough idea on the highest year you can go.
I have an 1985 ford and I can get parts up to a 1996.

Needs new transmission. Where do i find one?

Sorry to break the bad news to you , but if you are planing to pay someone to install a new trans , that would be more that the car would be worth. My Dad Spent $3000 for a new engine for his 87 New Yorker , then $1600 for a trans 2 months later. The Dodge dealer took advantage of an old man. This work should NEVER have been done. He ended up selling the car last year for $1200 , and I think he was lucky to get that much.
If you really want to do this , any auto wrecker will have a tranny for it , they were very common in many different Chrysler products.

Noise in right front wheel or dsah board

The solution is the upper strut mounting plate. To fix it you need to take out the strut tower and take apart the strut. The faulty part is the plate that has the 3 studs that actually mount the top of the strut to the frame. You may want to also plan on replacing the strut as well, when i took mine apart, the strut piston wouldnt go back into the strut body, that means its shot. Also if one side needs this done the other probably does too. The upper strut mount is about 20 bucks only from a dealer and the strut is about 60 from any auto parts store. hope this helps

94 New Yorker, replaces fuel pump and fuel filter and....

It's either not getting fuel or spark. Have you checked to see if you are getting any spark to the plugs. Take one of the plug wires off its plug and place it close to the frame or engine. When you crank the engine you should be able to see a spark jump from the plug wire to the frame. if you do not see a spark you have a problem with the ignition system. If you do see a spark then the problem is with the fuel system.

Hope this helps Good luck Loringh
