I have a 1986 IROC. Third light stays on but goes off when brakes are pressed. Opposite of what it is supposed to do. 1 light bulb in third light is out. Could this be the problem? A short out?

Definitely start by replacing any bulbs that are out. Brakes, markers, anything.

SOURCE: need 02 trailblazer third brake light removal

Open the full hatch.
Pull down the weather strip near the rear dome light.
There should be a wire with a connector in it. Disconnect it
Close the full hatch.

Open just the window hatch. There is 1 screw on either side of the bulb housing.

SOURCE: My third brake light dosen't work on my chevy s10 94'

I had a similar problem with my 1994 S-10 LS extended cab. Both tail brake lights worked fine. I removed the 3rd brake light cover and tested for voltage at the steel center of the two rivets and found the positive (driver side) negative (passenger side) were good. I checked the two metal strips that send power to bulbs and found the positive side was open. Seems the flared side of the rivet was not making contact with the metal strip. I bucked the rivet with a punch and hammer and it took care of the problem.

SOURCE: 2004 malibu maxx third brake light

It is an LED lamp and the entire terminal needs to be replaced. I would suggest checking the fuse first, being that the replacement can run over $60

Tail lights work but not brake lights 93 toyota camry

The brake light side of the bulbs is powered by the brake switch and travels thru the turn signal switch.
If the third brake light works, I would guess the problem is in the turn signal switch.

MY THIRD BRAKE LIGHT (LIGHT IN REAR WIND SHIELD) IS CONSTANTLY ON IS IT SUPPOSED TO REMAIN ON AT ALL TIMES, CHECKED BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH AND IT IS GOOD WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE

On some vehicles the lamps are controlled by a SAM( Signal Acquisition Module.)When these fail weird stuff happens.

The bulb needs power to come on and if the rear brake lamps are off, and not just burnt out, the third lamp cannot come on unless there is a faulty SAM or wiring short supplying the bulb with power..

Check your brake lamps come on with the brake pedal depressed first... if not, your brake pedal switch is bad or no power to it. I have often found both bulbs faulty on may cars.

The brake lights does not work when I have the light on. I think the car is not wired correctly. Also the third light won't turn off when I have the lights on.

check the brake light switch on the brake pedal for the third brake light staying on. check the bulbs in the rear of the car for the lights not working.if the bulbs are good then check for power to the light sockets.

Why is it that my window brake light not working

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Two things why the third brake light is not working. First, you may have a faulty third brake light bulb and that definitely needs replacement. Second is the brake light itself or the wiring is faulty. You will need to trace out the wire if it's loosen or worn out.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

1986 golf blows fuse for the brake lights every time I depress the brake pedal. It is not the brake switch. Running lights stay lit

You might try removing the brake light bulbs from each light including the third brake light and see if the fuse still blows. If it does not then replace the bulbs one at a time until it does. You will then have an area to look for the short that is causing your problem. If the fuse still blew with the lights out it will be a good time to get out the ohmmeter and check continuity for the power feed to the light sockets to ground. Not easy but a start!

THIRD BRAKE LIGHT

It is an indicator of all your bulbs in the rear. Check bulbs and sockets, possibly a wiring problem.

Third brake light screws

I was advised to go to Advance Auto (store) and tell them my problem. I did this, and the gentleman sold me a pack (4) square license plate nuts, #8 x 1/2" screws. the cost was $1.75. I popped the plastic nut into each whole and screwed the third brake light strip into place. No rattles!
