Transmission wont shift until about 4000rpms from 1st to 2nd gea

Hi Everyone. I bought a 2004 Grand Cherokee 4x4 4.0 6 cyl. with select tract transmission. I drove it home and noticed right away that in first gear it went to around 4000 rpms before shifting into second gear. After it was in second 3rd and 4th gears were smooth. I put it into reverse and id had no problem. Drove it again and the same thing it went to like 4000 rpms before kicking into second gear after it was in second gear the upper gears were smooth shifting. Then I noticed when I come to a stop sign or light sometimes it dosent drop down into first gear at all it starts off in second gear. I don know what to do. Please help. Thanks so much. God Bless

Hi, welllll to be honest I bought it at an auction. I know I know. But with jobs like they are I tried to be a good shopper and save a little of the little I have. Do you think I need a new transmission? or do you think its something not to bad?

Have a code check done and see if speed sensor or controller is working properly. if bought from a dealer, get it back there asap...they can't sell it in that condition!!...No test drive before you ploped down your money?

What are the symptoms of a speed sensor going bad on a 1997 jeep grand cherokee laredo 6 cyl.

Since alot of things rely on data from the speed sensor you will "usually" get an ABS alarm, little or no shifting,no indication of speed on the speedometer, and the check engine light. without the abs light and with a speed indicated I would lean toward a transmission problem

My 1996 grand cherokee transmissom is real slow

My jeep does the same thing but from 1st to 2nd i was told the solenoid valve in my valve body sticks until the fluid is warmed up and opens up.Cheapest thing to do is let your jeep warm up for a little bit to let the fluid cycle.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee shifting problem from 2nd to 3rd

Check the kick down cable. If it sticks the transmission won't shift. I sprayed WD-40 on both the top and bottom connectors , and it worked like a charm. It's alot cheaper them spending 2000 on a new transmission you don't really need.

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Shifting Problems

Check the Trans fluid level with it running and at operating temperature. Jeep NAG1 transmissions are known to have the input electric seal leak trans fluid. Not an exspensive fix add Mopar ATF4 and then relace the guild seal.
