2001 Nissan Sentra idling and running issues

My 2001 Nissan Sentra 1.8L is having idling and running problems. While idling (in gear or in park) the car would occasionally just die all of a sudden but would start right up without trouble. While operating at highway speed, the engine would occasionally lose power for 1-2 secs and come back on. It also hesitates occassionally when throttled. When this happens I notice a clicking coming from the area where the fuel pump relay is. I also notice a buzzard type sound (CEL flutters also) from the passenger side of the car. Ive given this car a complete tune-up, changed out the fuel pump, vacuum purge cannister, fuel pump relay, crank shaft position sensor and MAF sensor. The car can run like new for a couple of days without incident or it could start showing those problems for days on end. This happens in the cold or hot weather and cold or hot starts.

Any suggestions would help as I dont even have a CEL light to troubleshoot.

    I had a similar issue that kept happening for about a year. As it was still covered, I would just bring it back to the shop and they would always have to call for advice. They would replace some part, and then it would happen again. After Nissan replacing what seemed like almost every part in the car, they switched out some wires under the dash and that finally did the trick. I almost sold the car because of this problem!!! But it's performed flawlessly since the last repair.

    Well, I ended up taking it to the dealer to finally solve this problem when my car failed to start one morning. There was a frayed wire (blue/white) leading to the computer (left side engine compartment) which would cause an interruption of power. Tech said he sees about 3 or 4 cases a year regarding my same problem because the wiring harness which runs from the battery, underneath the radiatior and to the computer is too short. During the course of driving the wires are pulled and rubbed against metal parts which cause them to fray or completely disconnect with intermitten connectivity. A good way to tell its a problem with your computer is that you WONT see the CEL on your dash when you encounter no starts. Problem solved.

Toyota Tercel stuck in gear

Its a gear shift issue.


The shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.


There are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this occurred then its shifter assembly alignment issue.

2001 Nissan Altima idling high in parking or neutral

I have the same problem with my harrier 3000cc car. We have changed the idling sensor, airflow sensor. air filter, we have had the throttle checked, spark plugs, wiring and nothing works. The smell you are getting could be from your gear box, have it checked out early and if the gear shift is noticeable then you will need a gearbox specialist to open it and change the clutch plates. whats the new code? is it the same o2 sensor? you could have a vacuum leak causing it to set the same code. is your air filter clean? whens the last time you changed the fuel filter? had plugs installed in a long time? start with these items. they could all effect your fuel mileage. hope this helps

Open then hood while it's idling and listen for a hissing noise. Sounds like you have a bad vacuum leak. Hopefully a vacuum hose came loose and you can plug it back in

you hit the nail on the head ,cold and silicone chips ,they do not like the cold weather they can be temperamental to say the least ,as for finding the faulty component you will need an identical car that works ok ,then when yours will not start try swopping bits till you hit the one causing the problem.or sell it for a nice manual diesel version,

Own a 2001 nissan sentra check egine light is on, car will start but runs very rough and smell of fuel. It will idle roughly in park, but once in gear no power

sounds like engine rebuild time and you need to have the transmition rebuilt too. i hope this helps. if you want to try flush the engine and fuel lines with ethenol. but if you flush the engine you will need to empty the fuel tank first. after you flush the engine full with fuel and run at idol for a couple of minutes. treat the fuel. this should help the engine to run properly whilst you wait to rebuild it. give it a service too. when you flush the engine too white smoke should be emitted from the exhaust or if you have a catilitic converter the white smoke should be reduced. hope this helps.
