Gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on

I have a 2007 Chevy Malibu. I filled up my tank with gas, and the gas gauge went to zero. The low fuel light came on and as well as the engine light. Once my car gets down to half a tank of gas, the gauge goes back up, but the engine light continues to stay on. Help! Please!!

You will most likely need to replace the fuel pump assembly. The fuel gauge sender is attached to this.

They cost about $150-250 and it is located in the gas tank.

For now, make sure that your tank is full and keep track of miles driven so that you do not run out of gas.

Many parts stores will check the trouble code and reset the engine light for free.
They can tell you if there are any other problems.

This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!

Sounds like a bad sending unit. Is the check engine light on? If it is then most likely you have a bad sending unit.

Had a 1/4 tank of gas in car but low fuel light stays on, put 5 more gallons of gas in the car and light will not go off, gas hand will not move and car will not crank 2001 Chevy Malibu

check the connection for the fuel pump at the right rear wheel just above the control arm. the connection gets corroded and causes the fuel pump and gauge not to work. if the plug looks good then most likely the fuel fump assembly is bad.

weird...first thing to do is get a scanner hooked up to see what caused the check engine light-free, at pretty much any retail auto parts operation-i wouldn't get overly concerned with the gas gauge right now, teh code that tripped the check engine light might explain that problem.

The fuel level sensor is at fault and is setting the service engine soon light on. Your local Nissan dealer can repair this under warranty depending on your mileage. The fuel tank will need to be removed to access the sending unit.
