Very strange problem. When I crank my 2000 BMW 528i, if it cranks right up then everything runs fine but if it takes more than a few rotations to crank the transmission won't go to 1st gear automatically, it wants to start in 5th gear so I have to manually put it in 1st be even then it is very sluggish. Some times it has another trans. problem where it shifts hard into gears but for either problem if I park it turn off engine and re-crank everything is fine......what the heck is it doing???

I have a question regarding my 98 528i , it will crank once but not start then I retry it won't crank but I can hear the fuel pump humming , I have to ...
very simple friend, if it has a long crank then its the Starter, if it starts up right away but crank is weak, then its the battery.. if either of those is fine, then your problem lies at the alternator, usually alternators take a heavy hit if you like to blast music, or if you have a sound system! hope this helps!! you can get the alternator checked aswell as your battery for free!

pull plugs and marvel mistery oil in all holes let sit 24 hours then try to turn over buy hand if that dose not work pull oil pan and losen all rod and crank bolts if that dose not work tare it down and see whats wrong
Have you tried disconnecting the hot wire from the battery to the starter and cleaning both the connection from battery and on the starter. A toothbrush and water/baking soda?
Possible faulty ignition switch. common problem on ALL bmw's.
You need to check you are getting power at the crank wire when you try to crank the engine. Also check that the crank signal (12v) is also getting to the starter (could be dodgy wire between ignition and starter).
