IT is a zero tolerance engine which means that if you break a timing belt there will be valve damage. Check the harmonic balancer and if there is a rubber insert between the pulley and the crank shaft hub then replace the harmonic balancer as this rubber has failed and the pulley will fall off. If the key has sheared as you suspect there would be no engine noise as the engine would not be running. Fix the balancer first then check for the noise as it may be just the balancer

Tighten the connecting rod cap nuts

Look for a bulletin on that on the National highway safety admin. website, I thought I saw something like that earlier this morning...

We also had the same problem. it was the timing belt tensioner. How you can tell is take the timing cover off and see if the belt is jumping around.

I think what thay are asking is whether or not it is an interferance engine. If the timing belt goes, will pistons hit valves. Some engines are a disaster if the belt breaks, others have no problems at all. Most good parts stores, O'Reillys, Carquest, (not Auto Zone, Advance), will be able to give you this information.

If you red-lined it the most likely cause of a knocking noise is a spun bearing on the crankshaft. That means that a bearing has turned inside the bearing cap and is now restricting the oil flow. This will ruin your engine fairly quickly. The bottom end needs to come apart and the longer you drive it the worse it will get. Hope this helps.
