I have a 1988 Honda CRV. I just put in a new alternator but forgot to take the battery cables off and blew the inline fuse. When I replaced the fuse it blows again when the battery hooks up to the alternator. The alternator is fine, what is wrong?

Big error that, can throw acid in the eyes, as battery explodes, if you do it wrong, so easy, lucky you did it on the safe side of fuse.?

pure random luck that, next time read the FSM before working electrics. every page tells you to pull then NEG battery lug first.
and the answer is, its shorted.
you never said the exact fuse, so i guess.
88 is very very old car,... docs hard to find.
here is the rules on electrics.
1: the fuse has a hot side, (Battery plus)
2: the fuse has a load side, (only you know this) and is shorted.

that's it, find the short by disconnecting the loads,
the fuse is expensive so I disonnect them all then add them back 1 by one till boom.
only takes 2 fuse, 1 to find it and 1 to drive after fixed.
do not fall trap to the dark side, of the force and use a jumper
for a fuse or you will have a fire, or battery acid in you face.
seen both so many times, as I yell to the guy, hey dont do that.... oops too late. NOOBS do get hurt all the time. even when warned
the battery is to be respected.
it can produces about 5000 watts of energy.
never ever, short this battery,

next post a , schematic, (close)
to post.

i have the civic, 88 book open, (FSM) there are 2 fuses, 45 adn 55 amps. the 45 runs the whole car, the 55 is the charge wire. id remove the 45, and if the 55 blows, the alternator or its huge wire, is shorted, FOR SURE. i just saved you 1/2 the work finding which end is shorted. Some early cars, have fuse links not real fuses like today.; (they are jumpers that are fuses) next the drawings, 1998

id bet your car is very near the civic wiring... see the /look/ folder, for full size, this form has no Gallery, sadly and is the biggest failure here. IMO

SOURCE: blows fuses

SOUNDS LIKE THE ALARM HORN IS SHORTED, CAUSING FUSE TO BLOW.
TRY UNPLUGGING ALARM HORN & SEE IF FUSE STILL BLOWS.
IF IT DOES NOT BLOW, REPLACE ALARM HORN.

SOURCE: I changed the battery and

At a guess, I'd say that you have got the new battery in back to front. This means that you are hooking the earth wires to the Positive side of the battery.

Car cranks but will not start

first thing take the 120 amp fuse out and throw it away
the 100 amp fuse was installed originally to protect the wiring and other related parts
next by connecting to the wrong terminals there is a power surge that can damage the electronics in the ECM unit and alternator
removing a battery for a charge can corrupt the immobiliser system
I would suggest that you use a scanner to read any fault codes that may be stopping the engine and then reset the CPU program in the ECM to reset the immobiliser

Bought frontal crashed honda crv 52 plate, put new battery, no power, checked the inertia switch, found 100 amp fuse blown, replaced it, but blew straight away. no power to anything except the abs pump.

52 plate?
blew keyon, or key off, drumming fingers now..... straight = key off?
you do have a big short. and saved the fire.
so what is it, the FSM shows you all loads on that fuse.
so does the schematics at alldata.com. look. we do every day.
no years stated, so i can not look,

the 100a might be a shorted, alternator, but id bet its the harness. (crash)

what we do in a real shop is use 2 cheap tools to find all shorts.
Hard one>/
we use a DC battery charger, True DC not pulsing DC, quality !!
then with my DC amp camp meter,
I do this.
i disconnect the battery and put in a fuse bypass, 100amp. (jumper wire with 30amp fuse inline, like all FSM say to do)
i next attach my charger, minus to minus and plus to plus (tender care on polarity)
then i turn the amps know my fancy charger to say 10 amps.
an nice safe quantity.
i have current flowing now and then, use my amp clamp
on all wires on the main fuse box to find what line is shorted.
it shows 10amps to alt.
i unplug the ALT and bam, no more short.

that is how i do it.
ive found vast numbers of shorts in many systems.
car, , ships, trains , and other complex systems.
deep in to place , nobody ever goes.. some wild stories.
sea story:
on one ship , i found a short in a huge compartment on a CVA . (63? i forget now , 1973?)
that was not even documented,, later the crew fought over this space.
funny stuff, (no one could find it, but I had a TDR tester and that is
really a wire RADAR, finds the exact distance to the short)
to a 10th of a meter. tool.
this system was emergency radio.

any good DC power variable supply works here, use any with an
AMPS knob......
i post this to stop guessing and to save the cost for 100amp fuses
can cost more than the tools.

Check to see if alternator is charging. Battery light is an indicator that your alternator is not charging. Start engine use multimeter at battery 20 v dc or if autorange meter just dc. engine at idle the battery should read 14 - 14.5 volts. if not replace alternator.

Only my Battery fuse is going out and i keep replacing them but whenever i put the ground wire back on the battery the fuse gets blow out agian

Are you talking about fuse # 15 in the Power Distribution Center under the hood? The 70 Amp fuse?

There are only a few things that can make this fuse blow:

1. The battery is installed backwards
2. There is a short to ground in the alternator or the battery cable that goes to the alternator
3. A defective/shorted Electrical Load Detector Unit (ELD)

I guess you have allready found out, so I don't need to preach to you about how replacing a fuse without FINDING and CORRECTING the REASON it blew, will only cause another innocent little fuse to have to give up its life to keep your vehicle from burning to the ground!

It sounds like you are not getting power to the alternator if it is really god. check the large wire at the post with your meter it should have the same voilage as the battery. if not try cleaning the connections at the battery and check the inline fuse link .

NON CHARGING BATTERY

Could be an open connection in the line feeding the battery. Is there a fusible link inline? If so check the fuse or the line itself. Run on Ohm test from alternator to battery; this will tell you if the circuit is good. Sometimes it's as simple as a corroded or loose connection.
