2005 Subaru Legacy Gt manual transmission making a very loud clunking/ clicking noise. Drive-able, but the noise is very loud. Makes the noise 1st through 5th gear. But not so much in reverse. Any ideas on what could be wrong with the transmission?

I think you should buy repair manual first for your vehicle after that it will be easy for you to solve the problem. Check the link may be you will find something useful here 2005 Subaru Legacy
sounds like something to do with your turbo.. could be loosing boost through an air leak etc... which is where the oil might also be coming from if there has been a blowout pressure goes out oil comes in causeing smoke and loss of acceleration.
Turn off engine . get the vehicle on level ground. try to move driveshaft back an forth or,by rocking in twist motion,,, try to hear a knock,,,this would indicate a worn universal joint.either front or back, if you are good enough to discern which one is making the klunk, change both to be on the safe side. think they may be about 20 dol apiece.
